Hi
Just received online bill which was estimated and they had est an extra 281kwh on my night rate. I have telephoned then to give them reading and they advised me they will correct in next few days.

Im currently in credit with them and my husband says why should these companies earn the interest on our money, so can i ask for the money back (as it is mine) and stop direct debit? As i understand it, if you pay per 1/4 but pay by dd when you get the bill you will still get the discount benefits still?

I really could do with the money back and as ive just had bill it would be the ideal time to stop the monthly payments?

thanks in advance for your comments

How much do you pay per unit for your night rate?

You need to check your tariff. Some insist on monthly DD and put you on standard if you opt out of DD. Some allow quarterly DD and pay a discount, others don't.

You should be in credit now, but not as much as last month - at this time of year, your credit balance should be reducing so in spring it is around zero. Then it builds through the summer and decreases through the winter - in other words, the idea is you should be in credit most of the time, but by varying amounts. The DD discount more than compensates for interest you might be losing. But if you don't like the idea, go for a tariff that doesn't require it.
  • If you are in credit, all you need to do is ring them up and they will send the money to the current a/c from where the dd's are taken from. We were more than £500 in credit and we got the money back within a week.

Yes, meant to add that - you should be in credit but it should have been gradually reducing over the winter. If you have a large credit balance now, it suggests your DD is too high so you should get either a) the credit balance refunded or b) part refund and perhaps a lower DD. If you only have a small credit balance, you shouldn't expect a refund.
  • thanks for your replies.

Just looked at bill and its says:-
    Standard
    night 4.9245 per kwh
day 34.146 per kwh up to 900
    day 13.482 per kwh

i guess the night rate is economy 7?
    regards

Yes, it is. Do you have storage heaters? You can probably see from how much you're paying for your day rate that you need to use a large percentage of electricity at night to benefit from Economy 7 on your tariff.

I believe E.On's current discounts are:

6% for payment monthly by DD
3% for payment quarterly by DD
3% for prompt payment quarterly by a method other than DD

The above discounts are based on comparable standard tariffs. Different discounts may apply if you are not currently on a standard tariff.

Storage heaters use a lot of electricity overnight so Economy 7 makes them cheaper to run. To offset that, you pay more for electricity used during the day. Often everything used overnight is wired to the off peak meter so people can make Economy 7 work for them by running appliances overnight.

Most people use more electricity during waking hours so a single rate tariff works out much cheaper. Work out your annual kwh and put into a comparison site for E7 tariffs, then add the night and day together and put that in for a non-E7 tariff and see the difference.
  • thanks you magentasue. Once site is back up and running i will do a annual calculation. so i might post on here tomorrow if i get stuck.
    thanks again
