Hi All,

I was considering sigining up to sky but after reading some of the threads and chatting to the adviser I don't know who to believe??

Have provided the conversation and if anyone can help please do:j

Barry: How may I help you with your Sky purchase today?
You: Well I am considering joining SKY but I have a quick question.
Barry: I'd be happy to answer
You: If I take the HD offer, but cancel the HD subscription within the 8 days if I am not satisfied, am I still beable to keep the box but use this like a sky+ box?
Barry: No you need to return the box and we will give you sky plus box
You: would there be an extra charge for this?
Barry: Sorry extra charge as in monthly fee for sky plus?
You: ok so there is a monthly fee for sky + and HD then?
Barry: For HD yes not for sky plus
Barry: and if you wish to cancel the HD the monthly fee as well will be removed
You: if I was to cancel the HD and get a sky+ box is there any extra charges for this? ie installation
Barry: Oh ok. You need to pay the difference of cost for sky plus box - as in the cost for sky plus box is £99 and £30 set-up minus £49 for HD that you already paid - so you need to make a one off payment of £80
Barry: Does that help?
You: so basically if i take the hd offer but i am not satisfied and dont think the hd part is worth th monthly fee, I would have to pay someone £30 for changing a box? Yet if I was already an HD customer, and my 12 months had run out and I cancelled the HD subscription, I get to keep the box but just use it like a sky+ box?
Barry: yes you are right you pay the difference of one off cost - and as far as value for money is concerned for HD - to be honest I do not see customers not satisfied with our HD, as Sky offers the biggest HD channel line-up of any broadcaster in Europe.
Barry: Are we good to proceed?
You: Not according to the reviews that are going around as many seem to be opting for freesat as their HD is free and well at the minute there are only 31 channels that are in HD? Any indication of when their is likely to be more?
Barry: No, we do not have any update as yet from our marketing dept. If any we will let our customers know
Barry: So, are you looking for HD box or sky plus box?
Barry: I haven't heard from you in a while. Is there anything else I can do for you?
You: To be perfectly honest a normal sky box would do me but £60 for installation is really expensive
Barry: I see - Ok heres my deal with Sky plus box

You: I already have a dish could pick up a box for £20 and install it myself
Barry: The cost for sky plus box is £99 and £30 - thats £129 one off - what I'll do is give you a deal ordering online now, the box for just £49 one off and £30 set-up - so thats just £79 one off with installation, instead of £129

You: not really no as i could pick up a freesat box for that amount and receive more channels than freeview and HD channels for free!
Barry: But not the ones in our mixes which you can choose from our mixes

You: and i have also heard that thee is an extra charge for sky+ if the package is under £30?
Barry: no there is no charge for sky plus box, if you sign up monthly with me.
You: according to alot of people there is a charge i am only after 3 mixes and multi room. All my tvs are HD and have built in freeview so I think I will just stick with that just now as I feel paying £10 a month for a mere 31 channels most of which I won't receive as I am only wanting 3 mixes and the fact that if I even wanted a standard sky box you would be wanting £60 for installation where as in my eyes there is nothing to install, the dish is already there its just a case of swapping the boxes and given the fact that I would have already paid £49 then this is the same price as the standard box and given the current financial situation £60 to swap a box is a rip off
Barry: Ok. Thats fine. I cannot offer you a deal with Standard box, the sky plus box deal was the best deal I have.

You: It's ok being tied to a monthly subscription is one thing but to be charge an extra £10 for channels that your box is meant to be compatible with is just a con I feel. No that is everything thanks

Barry: its only with HD box

You: Yeah but the price that you are asking for the sky+ and installation or the standard box and installation is just too expensive. Like I said I could pick up a freesat box for £79 and there is also the little doubt that I am not able to choose what box I receive. Heard there is a backlog of reconditioned thompson boxes and also read the horror stories that some people have had with their boxes
You: Would hate to think that I would pay for something and be tied into a 12 month contract for it to be 12 months of engineers having to be called out
Barry: well, you answered your own Q - you can believe and trust on me who works for sky - and not on blogs who paste stories on their website - but anyways do think about it and once ready to purchase and place your order do come back online.

what are you wanting from sky? im looking at it myself - i was told on this forum i may get a free sky plus box from the sky stands at shopping centres etc? im looking out this weekend in meadowhall to ask.

the sky advisors conversation looks fine/true to me.

i want sky plus, i have a freeview humax pvr with twin tuners now but i want more channels, i.e discovery etc. my budget is around £20 per month, i was after all the entertainent apart from childrens mix, i dont want sports or movies.

the recommend a friend deals not on anymore, a friend did it last year and got the sky plus box totally free.

All I am after is 3 mixes. But on some of the threads here, people are claiming to being charged £10 if they have sky+ but package under £30! When I questioned the adviser his response was "no there is no charge for sky plus box if you sign up monthly with me" Does that mean if I sign with another adviser there is a charge?

There is NO additional rental charge for Sky+ as long as you remain as a subscriber.
The current minimum Sky subscription is £16.50/month for a single mix.

i believe you pay about £10 extra for sky hd? correct me if im wrong though.

I rented my house out a little while ago, and when I moved back in, i found the old tenants had had Sky plus installed (i.e. there were two sky cables coming in) but had taken the bobox with them. I still only had a standard sky box, so just connected one of the cables to the box and watched as normal. The I bought a Sky plus box from ebay for about £30, and once Id received it, simply phoned sky who took my viewing card details and upgraded my subscription from standard to Sky plus AT NO EXTRA COST, neither a one off fee, or monthly charge. I still pay £21.50 for 4 packages and as I say, had to pay no extra for the sky plus upgrade.

I was initially confused too though as I was sure that Sky used to charge an extra tenner a month, but I figured that that was when Sky plus was new. Now that Sky plus HD is the new darling though, theyre obviously not bothered about the extra charge for non-HD sky plus.

Just as a bit extra which may be of interest to you. I notice you talking about freeview in your first post. Just thought Id let you know that if you have a sky dish and and old box lying around your house already, then you can still watch all (or most at least) of the freeview channels without subscribing to sky at all. You dont even need a viewing card. The standard box I had before I upgraded to plus is now in my kitchen after I run my own aerial cable in from the dish. The box has no viewing card in it but I still gets all the terrestrial channels and alot of others aswell.

Can you explain exactly how this works please, i.e what cable, where you attached it to the dish etc .

I've just got standard sky, no sky+ or sky+hd, so assume one cable coming down.

as long as you subscribe to any sky pack minimum £16.50 you do NOT pay for sky+

if you just want sky+ but no extra channels then its £10

sky+HD is £9.75 on top of whatever package you have!!!

To add a second Sky box its necessary to have a Quad LNB, its then possible to wire an extra feed using satellite grade coax and the appropriate F connectors.
Most ordinary Sky installations will only have a single LNB but the good news is they are fairly cheap and easy to replace, assuming you like climbing ladders.

Quad LNB and Cable kit found on Ebay



Not my advert, if I was looking I'd probable try Satcure.
