Just to clarify.
Yes the drum will move up & down on it's shock absorbers but when the Bearing goes it feels loose, unlike the dampenned effect of the shock absorbers, it is free to move about an inch or so with no resistance, other than it's own weight, and usually with a bit of a clonk.
If there is no obvoius vibration when machine is in spin (with a load) then it is unlikely to be the bearings and is more likely something between the drum & the outer caseing of the drum or even a broken spider, though this'll usually vibrate badly.
Removing the back & top will usually detect the problem AFTER UNPLUGGING FROM THE MAINS!! (Bl@@dy hurts if you don't).
It's because of the confusion over what constitutes a 'Noisy' machine that engineers insist on paying a visit before they will diagnose the problem, as well as the difficulty in describing symptoms (such as the drum moving up & down).
As a precaution whenever I serviced a machine I ALWAYS checked the pump for any screws, money, jewelry, bra wires, Etc that can cause problems later. There is nearly ALWAYS something lodged in there.
In fact I had a freind that use to make a lot of money fron emptying scrap machines."Unhappiness is not knowing what we want, and killing ourselves to get it."Post Count: 4,111 Thanked 3,111 Times in 1,111 Posts (Actual figures as they once were))Women and cats will do as they please, and men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea.0 -
If the drum bearing has gone then the machine will give off a dull roaring sound during spin particularly as is comes to the end of the spin and the drum slows down. Bearing replacement is not cheap. A 15 year old machine is really on it's last legs, if you can afford it get a new one
Bra's are a washing machines worst enemy if the metal support comes out and enters the inner part of the drum it will snag the revolving part causing damage to both parts (expensive) and can result in torn clothing during the wash cycle.
Today's top tip >>>>>>>>>> Ladies put your bra's in a pillow case sealing it with an elastic band befor you put them in the machine."Imagination is more Important than knowledge"0 -

are bra wires easy to remove yourself or is it best to call an engineer?0

Couldn't have put it better myself. Haha!!
Learn from the mistakes of others - you won't live long enough to make them all yourself.0 -
removing any object from the inner drum usually means dismantling the drum, but in some cases the bottom sump hose from the drum casing leading to the pump can be removed giving access to the bottom of the drum were large metal objects may collect."Imagination is more Important than knowledge"0

My husband replace both the bearings and a broken belt on an rather ancient hotpoint few years ago. The bearings where cheap and it meant the machine could be kept going for another few years.
Then we got another machine for free.
I would suggest that everyone get a haynes manual for washing machines. Costs £9.89 excluding postage from amazon and it is worth its weight in gold. As it means you can look at the pictures as you take it apart. Not something that is to easy to do with a website.
Even just the info on changing the bearings saved us the cost of the book many times over. You would be looking at charge of what at least £120 if not more. Which was more than the machine was worth. But for about £30 for the bearings we had washing machine that worked better and did not sound like a jumbo jet taking off.
