What's the limitation on the flights? Are there any black out periods?
Athens is Okay for along weekend0 -
I'd ignore anywhere budget airlines go to - which includes Istanbul (it's half Europe, half Asia...) and most of Central Europe. My suggestion would be somewhere in the Balkans - Macedonia, Sarajevo, Tirana, Montenegro are all excellent and as it's unlikely they'll get lcc service any time soon ordinary fares will be huge.0

are the balkans likely to be cheaper than say Athens?smile --- it makes people wonder what you are up to....

What do you mean?
If you're talking about flights, they'll be much more expensive than Athens as there's a fair bit of competition on UK-Athens routes from both full-service and budget airlines.
If you're talking about expenses while you're there, I suppose it depends what you're likely to do. Expensive hotels are expensive everywhere in the world, but if you're sticking to ordinary ones and eat in ordinary restaurants it's likely to be cheaper than in Greece. It'll certainly be more memorable as the place you went when you won the competition than Athens would be.0
