Would disagree about Swiftcover...search the forum for evidence.

I find Fortis are good, any of the Axa underwritten policies can be a bit hit and miss

I am speaking from my own experience of putting a claim in,and getting it settled-however I bow to your superior knowledge and i will take a look at fortis in future.Any tips for good home insurers,is it the same?
  • Ive searched for 'Fortis' but am having no luck, or am i just having a thick day??!!!??? Are they the underwriters? If yes what should I be looking for ???? Thanks
  • Same as car insurers, their all a bit Arfur Dalyish about paying out.

I buy my policy from a local insurance broker. This is the only insurance I do like this. All the rest of my policies are done on-line.

I have a pre-existing condition (as does my husband) but it is no problem with Fortis as long as we can answer some health-related questions to their satisfaction. My previous insurers were Norwich Union but they did not want to know when I developed a non-critical, non-life threatening conditon.

Fortis provide the cover for a lot of companies

For example the free ones that come with some Alliance and Leicester bank accounts. Despite being free, they paid up promptly on both occasions I have had to claim - quicker than the paid for policy other members of the party had.

You can arrange cover with Fortis through a broker, direct with fortis or as stated previously they underwrite some of the branded policies including the Post Office.

I would recommend you go through a local broker as they will be able to go over your personal details to make sure the policy is suitable and you understand what it covers / does not cover. The advantage of going through a broker rather than typing your own details into a website. Is if the broker advises you incorrectly you can sue the broker for compensation (They have insurance to cover this). If you have typed the information in yourself and make a mistake etc its your problem and there is no one to sue
