Hi,

my son has school dinners and they ocst £1.70, lately he has been coming home saying he had a jacket potato and beans/chicken for lunch , which i thought was ok until he showed me how much he gets. half a potato and one measley scoop of beans.
i went into the school and they said this is a normal size lunch for a 10 year old.

am i being stupid or ripped off! i mean £1.70 witha small cup of water and a small choc biscuit.

Thats a poor show - is it like that every day and are there other options for him to choose from?
My boys have school dinners and there's a choice of 2 main meals, sides, a salad bar, bread, hot and cold puds and choice of drink ie milk/water/juice etc. It's organic/locally sourced (where possible) and costs £1.80 per day. The school sends a menu home. Can you get a menu from the school? A jacket and beans should be as well as a main meal ie omlette/meat dish etc not just on its own. I wouldnt pay £1.70 for that.

Sometimes in establishments i find that the menu is not actually reflected in the food served.
  • we do get a menu sent home, but its often changed at the last minute

    todays option was:
ham and pineapple pizza and scoop beans (all gone by the time son got there)
1/2 jacket potato with scoop beans
    small heart shape biscuit
    small pot fruit

small cup of water (i give him extra for fruit juice)

they normally have a 2 choices of a main meal but by the time my sons class gets there all thats left is the potato.

i would give him packed lunch but he doesnt like bread or pastry or fruit but loves veg

Yes i've recently been looking at my kids dinner's more closely after my 7 year old comes home ravenous daily.

Yesterday he complained that his school provided lunch was sandwiches ... 1 slice of bread with 1 slice of ham, with abit of lettuce on the side, followed by a yogurt !!!! and im paying £1.75!!!

I went in to complain this morning and was told the same "thats it's concidered adequate" After a talk to the boys about what they normally get im seriously concidering moving them to packed lunch's at least i'll know they are getting a reasonable amount.

No offence but my boy's have good metabalisms half a flipping sandwich and a yogurt is not enough to see them from 9am till 3pm no wonder they are starving when they get home.

this is what i am saying, he has just come home now and he is starving, they only had lunch at 1.15pm , has a good breakfast and now he wants pasta chicken and veg for tea.

i thought the whole point of cooked school dinners was that they could have a smaller meal for tea

Not being funny but the reason most people have school dinners is so that they have the choice of a cooked meal at lunch time. We put DD onto them for a week when we ripped out our kitchen so we knew she was being fed properly.
I expect most people would be able to russle up 1/2 a ham sandwich and a youghurt for less than £1.75!

This wouldn't be enough for the 10 year old boys I know!

well half a jacket potato is the recommended portion, and so is one scoop of beans, so really they should be providing another 3 portions of fruit or veg to even reach the 5 a day target!
A waist is a terrible thing to mind.
