My 8 month old eat's more than that for her lunch. Seriously that is bad. I used to do lunch time duty at work (school) and I used to think how small the portions were. Most of the children used to moan that they were still hungry straight after they had eaten! I would definitely give him packed lunch for a while and see what he thinks.

I think when children are growing it isn't down to the amount the eat, more the quality of the food they eat! In all honesty 1/2 a potato and some beans really is not enough for a 10 year old! Children need as many calories as adults as they burn them so quickly. Problems (obesity) arises when the calories they eat are empty calories or continual junk!

My LO is a skinny thing but very tall. She eats 4 meals a day of very healthy food.

OP- Is your son yr6? A lot of schools have the older children going in first as the younger ones take longer to eat their dinner. If this is the case suggest to the school that they rotate which year/class goes in last so it's not the same kids all the time having no choice left.

Is there no salad bar, so he could top up his jacket potato meal? The ones I've seen have items like sweetcorn, grated carrot, pasta, coleslaw as well as 'salad veg' on them.

He is yr 5, they do rotate but on the days when his class is 1st or 2nd they seem to have lentil casserole, 3 bean chilli or quiche lorraine.
he will be having school lunch tomorrow as it is roast, well thats what the menu says and he does like his veg.
no salad bar but they do offer coleslaw but they seem to stick raisins and apples in everything,

    thanks for all the comments
  • It's because of Jamie oliver that school dinners are the misery that they are.

He goes in guns blazing, take this and that off the menu, feed them some other carp that kiddies don't like. All that's left is the food no one likes and people wonder why their children have half a spud for dinner.

Don't get me wrong if schools were providing smiley faces and twizzlers I wouldn't be best pleased (did any actually do that?) but some of the menus are terrible, especially for fussy eaters.

A school can only provide so much choice. they have to take into account how many children will be eating. So if 100 children were having dinner and the main food choices were baked potatoes, roast lamb and pasta, they have to cook so many portions of each. Say 62 lamb, 22 pasta and 22 baked potatoes (a few extra portions are made too) In an ideal world, all children would get the choice of 3 but that's just not possible.

well half a jacket potato is the recommended portion, and so is one scoop of beans, so really they should be providing another 3 portions of fruit or veg to even reach the 5 a day target!
    It's 5 a day, not 5 a meal ;)
