Moving Home - Royal Mail Redirection Service

I'm just thinking ahead and making a list of people and places to inform them of my new address and I know of the Royal Mail Redirection Service (which we will use) but does anyone know how accurate the survice is? I don't
want any mail to go astray.
I've lived in my current house for 20 years and my ex-husband lived in the house when I moved in and had been here since about 1975 so I've never had any post addressed to a previous occupent.
It costs £33.60 for 12 months which you can extend for a further 12 months after that but that's for each surname in the house. There is 3 of us living in the house, my new husband, my 17 year old daughter (different surname) and myself (still getting mail in old surname as well as new one). So I can't work out if it'll cost double or triple.
Any thoughts on this one?

Hi Socks,
I'm not sure what you'll have to pay regarding the surnames, but i know this: When you set the redirection up they say it takes about a week for it to kick in, but it took just over two weeks for mine to kick in. I had to ask a nice lady in my local sorting office to keep all my mail for me, she said she wasn't supposed to do it.
So make sure you set it up in good time so you don't have any hassle.

Even with the service some mail slips through, so best to leave a forwarding address.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. when we moved 6 months ago we redirected our mail in advance read what the form says as yes the redirection did start after a week but i think it said on the form that it can take up to 6 weeks
the only thing i can suggest is to change your address with the important people eg.bank, doctor, dentist etc make a list now and keep adding to it as you will remember.
we also gave the people who were moving into our house a really large stamped addressed envelope to send on any mail after a month, they did this but i think we had to pay a bit as it was slightly overweightWell we finally did it got a house not on a main road, next a railway line or any other werid and wonderful things that get on my nerves!!!

I've currently got a redirect in place, it seems very good to me - I haven't noticed any problems - even the invites to DFS cocktail evenings are getting through!
I think it's £6.65 per surname per month - but the cost comes down if you pay for a quarter, or a year up front.0 -
Request the re-direction at least 2 weeks in advance, they tell you 5 working days but it took 2 weeks for mine! And yeah, the occasional letter slips through the net, so it is best to leave a forwarding address.0

Agree with the others re the delay in the forwarding to be set up. Took approx 2 weeks for ours to finally start being redirected.0

Thanks for all your help.
I'll start making a list now.

Hi Jill,
I work in a Post Office. Royal Mail normally say they need five working days notice to set up a redirection, from the date they receive it,so if you hand your request in at a Post Office start counting from the next working day.You will have to pay a separate fee for each surname.
Current fees are:
1 month £6.65
3 months £14.55
6 months £22.40
12 months £33.60
for redirection within the UK (If you are moving abroad there are different fees.)
Don't forget to take appropriate forms of ID along to the Post Office..the rules on ID for redirecting mail are strict (for security reasons) and the Post Office cannot accept the redirection without correct ID.
Generally I think the service is good, but there are occasional problems.Don't hesitate to complain if you are not satisfied (as soon as possible.)
Good Luck with the move.

it is touch and go depending on what the service in your area is like.
Personally i wouldnt risk it as important mail could go astray.
probably safer to get new residents to forward it to you or something alike.0 -
Like I said, Royal Mail says you need 5 working days, but I have done it 3 times now and it always took at least 2 weeks. So arrange early, just to be safe!0
