Mum Dies... SAGA Insurance Cancelled

My Mum had a SAGA insurance policy on her car. My sister needed to use the car after her death to do the necessary running around.

Rang Saga and they cancelled the policy on the spot, leaving my sister with an uninsured car.

She asked if she could add the car to her existing policy (again with SAGA) was told no as the car no longer has an owner.

Mum died on Saturday... as an insurer for older people I find this startling and insensitive.

Surely ALL insurers should give 30 days grace upon death? C'mon Martin - get on the case.

I don't thinkg you have comprehensive car insurance to drive anyone's car - only third party. And the OP said, that SAGA would not let the sister to put mum's car on her insurance as the car has no owner - I find that ridiculous!

Where did I say I had comprehensive cover for any car?

And I still think she can insure herself on her own policy to drive any other car

I'm quite sure she can't because the car no longer has an owner as such, so nobody ought to be driving it til the ownership documents are changed?

  • My OH's grandfather died and was the owner of a car, his wife was still alive but did not hold a driving license. The insurance company wanted to do the same and cancel the policy there and then but eventually agreed that the car could be insured under the wifes name but not be driven.

Is there not a husband that the cars insurance could be transferred too? They must have some steps in place as the car could still be stollen!
Will not spend more money:naughty:, but will spend more time looking for that great bargain!

She does need to check her own insurance policy as she can be insured to drive any other car (3rd party) and whilst she is driving the car its insured to be on the roads. Its when she gets out of the car its no longer insured.

The car doesnt have to be insured to be driven as long as the driver is insured.

    I'm sorry for your loss.

Just curious, if she had insurance, and had to do some running around etc.
why couldnt she just have used her own car and avoided all this bad feeling

The car doesnt have to be insured to be driven as long as the driver is insured.

It might have an insured driver driving it but surely if it's not 'owned' then it can't be taxed/on the road/driven? I may be wrong...used to sell car insurance but am by no means an expert...just what I thought happened :o

It says so in the first post, the sister wanted to add the car to her own existing policy
