It does, because you get through the first bottle neck, Immigration, first. If I hadn't got to the front of the Immigration queue, I wouldn't have made my connection. We didn't have to wait for our bags at JFK they were there waiting for us.

You have flown indirect once and you made your connection anyway.
Millions make indirect flights without a problem. In any case airlines know when a plane has landed and which plane the visitors are due to board next. They will usually hold the flight if there is to be a short delay because people are in immigration.
I would hazard a guess that more people have missed their connection in London because an internal UK flight was late - airlines are less happy to delay international flights.
I have to say flying with a connecting flight in the states is a real pain. Basically you have to go through immigration at your first landing point, collect your bags, put them on another carousel, then find your connecting plane and get on it.
