  • Great post - always a big help to know when others had their lightbulb moments and how they began to tackle their debts. It really helps to know that the 'slog' is worthwhile and ultimately very rewarding.

Fantastic! Well done you. It takes some self-discipline to do that, so you have something else to offer your new employer!

    Debt-free and Proud!
Cleared by Barclaycard off last month just can't close it until I receive a zero balance statement! Hopefully next week!
    Debts (As of 10th September):
    Original - £7938.11, Now - £0

Matched Betting Profits (From 05/11/06): £1026.45 (of which £214.20 is cashback)
  • I'm a third year student too - no job yet though. I'm hoping to start my real debt busting upon graduating (5 months to go - yay!)

My general plan is to level my disposible income with that of my partners and use the excess to repay my debts (and I'm hoping to get a job in which that will be almost £600 per month). That way once they are paid off I can afford to increase our joint standard of living and either buy or rent a nicer house!
    £4000 challenge

    Currently leftover - £3872.15
  • Good for you, well done :j

Wow, wasnt expecting so many replies, so thanks to everyone for the support.

Went into Barclays today to ask for a separate basic current account, (going to have a go at the matched lay betting, and want to keep it separate) The advisor asked why I wanted a separate account, and I just told her that I was going to use for internet stuff - a bit of buying and selling - then she tried to flog me a student Barclaycard, felt quite smug telling her how I'd just cancelled it yesterday, and wouldnt be taking her up on the fantastic 19.9% offer. or their contents insurance that she then tried to sell me!

Even managed to get a signature on here now, so will be updating as time goes by.

    Well done, congrats!

One thing though, if you have cancelled the barclaycard and they got £400 odd quid from you in late payment fees, why not claim them back?

It's worth a go if you've not got the card anymore. And the money can go towards any other debtbusting you might need to do. https://www.bankchargeshell.co.uk will point you to the forum where you can get advice on how to do it
