  • Thank you to Volcano re: www.philipmorris.uk about the ideal storage for paperwork/private files in a gun cabinet.
Contacted them, very helpful when explained the need. Ordered PD7 (extra deep) approx 15";; height, 16"; wide, 12";deep, ideal for several ring binders etc. Apparently comes with 4 holes drilled through steel, to attach to load-bearing wall with special bolts. (I bought 4 bolt@ £2 each, save searching for them elsewhere) Cost: £83.20 + bolts £8 + p+p £5.50 Special order so may take 10 days /2weeks to arrive. Perfect to leave stuff in while on hols. Will advise when get it as to how effective. Certainly cost a lot less than good safe.
Thanks. Bought the Chain ; Cable Anchor Point (£10) + cable + lock (£12) OH affixed to the wall outside & entwined Wheelie Bin. Great idea.:T

Don't wait for the fire service if you haven't got an alarm there is no excuse fit one NOW. Less than a £5 on the high st, sometimes less than £4. Yes I'm a firefighter, yes I went to a fire recently where a whole family died.

and dont forget to replace the battery every 8 months (they say 12 but why risk it for the sake of a few pence!!!)

  • 5. Motion sensing external lights. Again relatively cheap, and just one more thing to put someone off if they are snooping round the back of your house.

remember to make sure that the lights and sensors are outta arms reach, and realtively high up, you dont have to use the halogen floodlights (which are very good but drown your whole street in light!) you can get nice looking security lights that just pop on when you walk around the corner like these:- http://www.discountelectrical.net/enter.html?lang=en-uk&target=d25.html

and use common sense make sure you have a shed alarm and a good lock secured with good bolts!! and dont leave ladders outside unlocked, use a bike lock or a chain and padlock. dont make life easy for the burglar low life. try and think like one, imagine your locked out of your own home, how you gonna get in?

oh and like the crimewatch tv program said, "dont have nightmares!!"
  • Hi I found a great little freeware program. It is called CATSPY, and basically it uses your web cam as a security camera. when there is no movement in front of the camera the program is in idle, but if anyone or thing should pass in front of the lens the pc starts to record for as long as the movement continues. the image is then saved and can be viewed using windows media player. time overlap can be set manually and the files will be kept for a user-defined length of time, before being overwritten, this should ensure that the hard drive doesnt become stuffed with hours of useless video files. best of all, its totally free............or the cost of a camera if you dont have one

copy and paste to your browser http://www.catspy.de/

a computer would be one of the first things thieve would take!! therefore losinf that vital evidence
  • Don't forget you can't user electronic timers with energy saving bulbs although not all bulb packs make this clear.

Once again though theoldmiser, it's important to remember that barring your windows is locking yourself in just as it locks others out. I know I'm lucky to live in an area where crime isn't too bad at all, but I haven't always and I'd rather not imprison myself although that is, of course, a personal choice and we all have to decide how far we want to go in relation to security... That's not to say I never worry and never feel unsafe but I know that (as well as the fire entrapment risk) if someone was breaking in at the back of my house, I'd like to be able to get myself and children out at the front or vice versa - they can have the TV, I'll keep the children!

I'll keep the TV!!!!! they can have the children!!!;) ;););)

True, but if you use a wireless webcam, this can operate independently of a PC. They can directly email pictures/video, or upload them to an internet website. That way, the PC can get nicked, and the evidence is preserved!
Of course, I may just be talking b****cks!
