Petrol vs Diesel Cost Debate

Skoda Octavia 1.9tdi, not particularly powerful but for a workhorse it does alright.Which engine do you have Bill?
I've also got a Land Rover Series III with a 21/4 litre diesel engine. Now that's a proper diesel, all 62bhp of it!
It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die0 -

Dress it up however you like, but a 130bhp torquey diesel engine will never have as much power as a 131bhp petrol engine, and gearing aside it will never out-accelerate it, particularly as diesel engines tend to be heavier than their petrol counterparts.
The attitude you're displaying is the typical "I've got a new TDi engine, it'll out-accelerate a Ferrari". You're very much deluded. Remember, while your 'King of Torque' engine runs out of steam at 4000rpm, the petrol varient will be accelerating right up to 6000rpm with a much wider power band, and it won't require a turbo either.
For motorway trips, a diesel is usually a good choice - but for pure fun, it'll never ever be as good as a N/A petrol engine.
So true, I am forced to drive quite a few diesels during works time, mainly mazda 626 (57) and BMW 118 / 320 / 520 (all 08) and they are not a patch on my Celica on normal roads. I am sick and tired of having to change down gear when coming up to junctions to stop the diesels bogging down or even stalling. My Celica will pull away from around 35mph in 6th, the BMW320 woiuld have a fit and cough & Kangaroo all over the place if I tried it. The only place I would prefer diesel is on long motorway trips where I have to admit it is very relaxed at XXX mph (fill in your own illegal speed here LOL)Totally Debt Free & Mortgage Free Semi retired and happy0 -

As I said when buying second hand for cost VS performance it will always beat a petrol though
