HSBC asking for ID documents

Hi all,

I applied recently for the HSBC credit card, have had my acceptance confirmed and have had the credit agreement sent to me for my signature. The covering letter states that when I return it I will need to enclose a recent payslip and a utility bill.

Two problems:
(1) I do not have any utility bills in my name. They are all in my housemate's name. I have a mobile phone bill but suspect this would not be accepted. No other CC company has ever asked me for a utility bill as a form of ID.

(2) I am far from happy about putting original documents in the post.

Does anybody have experience of getting round either or both of these problems?

Thanks

Go to your local branch and take a passport and driving license and any other official ID you have and your mobile bill and explain it to them.
A driving license is all I took, which they accepted.
  • Most credit card companies ask for a utility bill but I have never sent them one. You may be able to send a bank statement and other credit card statements, I find it much easier to open up a bank account a few weeks before applying for the credit card with the bank.

I had that reply. I have sent documents and they replied saying i sent the wrong documents although they are exactly what they asked for - all 3 examples. I will be going to the branch!

Do you have a bank account or any other c/cards ? If so then they will suffice. I sent a bank statement and another c/card statement as all my utility statements are on-line. I checked with them first and they said
the bills are only required to confirm your address so other statements would be fine.
  • We are in the process of getting a mortgage, and having the same problems with ID. My partner 'unofficially' lives with a friend and is not on the electoral roll. He has no credit cards or utility bills or benefits etc.
We gave in his provisional driving licence and Halifax said they wouldn't accept this.

My question is - what the heck does whether he's passed his test or not have to do with us getting a mortgage?

We've had to do some real juggling and switching of addresses on bank stuff to get it sorted which had delayed the whole process and will all need changing again once we're in the new house.

Have tried to find rules on ID on the Internet without sucess.

    what do you mean "unofficially"
I have sent original documents onspecial delivery to HSBC and have had them returned without problem
As for the driving licence ...it would depend how long he has had it I would imagine. They will require definite evidence of address from recent bills and I have never managed to get anyone (even Costco) to accept mobile phone bills

  • Just meant that he is only lodging there (started off temporarily but had stretched to over a year) and his statements go to his parent's house. Nothing comes throught the post to his current address.

He had had a provisional driving licence for 6 months whilst learnng to drive. It has his current address on but they won't accept it.
  • Then the application on the mortgage, did he not say his address now is his parents for credit scoring?

any official document with this name and address on at his parents should be fine then
  • They will accept a passport
    travelover
  • yes but its address id they need as well as passport - if all his mail goes to parents then I would think the application for credit score history says hia parents address now?
