Sorry, to put my self in the conversation but, I have a dilema
I am on income support and have the rent and council tax paid in full.
My child benefit is 28.00 a week for to children, one is 9 the other 3
Before the taxs credits were introduced I got over 100 pounds income support, but then they split this up and I only get 56 pounds a week, and they start to pay me 73 pounds a week in child tax credit. Thou I work 8 hours a week, I don't get paid working tax credits and they never help with nursery costs
They now want be to pay back, and stop my child tax credits, as I claim the new ward but they forget to put in my income,I allways give them a istemated figure, because even so I only work 8 hours a week I am paid 10 pounds a hour.
I've ready here that is no use to reduce your income, as does not made a diferece.
Will I be better of working 16 hours a week?
If you worked 16 hours or more you'd get WTC and CTC but may have to pay all your council tax, housing costs. You wouldn't get free school dinners either.

Working 16 hours means its likely you'd get help with nursery costs and you'd be able to keep all maintainance from your ex without it affecting your award.

You can play about with figures here www.entitledto.com or somewhere like CAB can do a 'better off' calculation.

Like spendless says, you'd get to keep all of the maintainence without it effecting the tax credit award, but you might have at least some council tax and rent to pay as your unlikely to qualify in full for HB and CTB.

I think what would be the clincher, would be that you'd get 70% of your childcare refunded and get to keep any maintainence in full.

Once you have any idea what the childcare you would pay is, it should be easy enough to use the online HB and CTB calculators and also calculate your Tax Credits.

There shouldn't be an overpayment on your child tax cedit for when your on IS. As long as you meet the IS rules for entitlement and income, then you automatically get full CTC, they dont look at your income as IS have already assessed eligibility.

I would query when and where the overpayment occurred, all award details when on IS are passed to HMRC but IS, you dont't pass the details, therefore how's it your fault ?,
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.
  • From next year the amount of child card payments goes up to 80% from 70%.
Giving up is easy...... just keep on trying!
  • I think I'll be better off with 16 yours work, even if I have to pay some rent and council tax. I am going to try to do this calculations on the site you guys mention .
    thank you
I am going to go to CAB AS WELL.

  • Just had my extra money as a result of the deductions. I was expecting about £100 and they have given me £900! Apparently after calling them it is for last year as well! Looks like they back date it for more than one year!
