Does your partner earn ?, the amount of tax credits you get seems low for someone on your income.

On £7200 with £250 childcare per week, you should be on a lot more than £180 per week in tax credits.

From what I estimated, your award should be around double what your getting. I think that childcare has been missed off your award. (not taking in to accounts any change of circs or overpayments)

You need to contact them and see what they say.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.

If i pay into a pension is there anyway of me getting more money,

    thanks for your helps!!!

Basically, for every £1 a week you put into pension contributions, you will
get 37p a week in extra Tax Credit.
  • The Inland Revenue have prepared a worksheet to deduct pensions and gift aid payments:

Note that once your income gets below £5220, you tax credits award wont increase any further by lowering your income

If anyone is looking at deducting Gift Aid payments, the amount deducted is the grossed up amount to include the tax rebate eg. If £100 is gifted the amount to deduct is:

    (100/78) x 100 = £128.20

    Not £100
Well I never knew that! And they don't exactly advertise the Gift Aid thing either ...

Anyway, I'd be surprised if it made a difference to our entitlement but I'll look into it.

I did some calculations myself and worked out that for a family of 2 kids, aged 16 to 19 and in full time education, you can put all except 5k of yr salary into
    a pension scheme,then claim:-

    - WTC - about 8k
    - EMA - 3k for 2 kids
    - Child Benefit - about 1k

In total you would have about 17k to live on - and Gordon Brown also tops
    up yr pension contributions!

You won't be able to claim Council Tax or Housing benefit though - only 50% of pension contributions is taken into account for that.

It does smell like a loophole that the Treasury are going to close....
Still wouldn't work for me even if the kids were the right age (but doesn't the EMA go directly to them:confused: ), putting all but £5k in a pension still means we have to add on the £7k benefits in kind so £12k in total.
  • Sorry, to put my self in the conversation but, I have a dilema
I am on income support and have the rent and council tax paid in full.
My child benefit is 28.00 a week for to children, one is 9 the other 3
Before the taxs credits were introduced I got over 100 pounds income support, but then they split this up and I only get 56 pounds a week, and they start to pay me 73 pounds a week in child tax credit. Thou I work 8 hours a week, I don't get paid working tax credits and they never help with nursery costs
They now want be to pay back, and stop my child tax credits, as I claim the new ward but they forget to put in my income,I allways give them a istemated figure, because even so I only work 8 hours a week I am paid 10 pounds a hour.
I've ready here that is no use to reduce your income, as does not made a diferece.
Will I be better of working 16 hours a week?
    betabraga :p
