help what can we claim ?

My dh was a Taxi driver up until the weekend working for himself , the reason he isn't amnymore is that the car blew up on the way to london at the weekend.

I have no idea what we can claim to keep food in the cupboards until he finds work . I called the tax credits people and she was no help just told us the working tax credit woyuuld be stopping . I wish i'd kept my mouth shut now.

we have £20 to last until the next child tax credits on the 16th and thats supposed to pay the rent and council tax . there must be some help for us but i don't know where to go to find out ?

Ring the benefits helpline is your best bet but it can sometimes take a while to get some money from then but I believe that you can sometimes get a crisis loan. Their number is:0800 88 22 00

    Good luck

You will probably be eligible for Income Support, and possibly JSA for you/your husband if hes looking for work.

You should still get Child Tax Credit, you'll loose entitlement to Working Tax Credit through not working.

You can claim Council Tax Benefit and Housing Benefit, these will also be payable in full if you get Income Support/ Income based JSA.

With Income Support and Income Based JSA , you also get full entitlement to Child Tax Credit.

The best bet is you get alll forms ASAP and send them in to at least get your claism going.

Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit forms are on your local council website

JSA and Income Support claim details are on the Jobcentreplus website
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.

What about one of you finding work for at least 16 hours a week. That way you'd keep your WTC. Doesn't have to be forever, just to tide you over.

    Good Luck

believe me we are both looking for work he's sent in 3 application forms today and i have sent off two cv's but now we are out of stamps and with no more money even for stamps we are hoping one of these proves fruitful.

we are pretty hopeful - its just getting over this difficult patch.

No money for stamps? you can afford to have the internet and run your pc on electric so im sure you can afford a stamp.
It doesnt take stamps to walk into Asda ot Tesco to ask for jobs.

Look on your local council website or ring personnel. Most local authorities are always looking for:

    School meal/lunch time assistants
    School cleaners
    Office cleaners
    Lollipop persons
    Care assistants

All pay above min. wage and often immediate start.

When i was job searching i was required to attend 'job club' where i got free advise for my CV and use of the computer/printer/copier. Also we were allowed to use the phone to call for application forms/interviews. Lastly there were supplies of envelopes and stamps available for sending application form/CV's in the post. Job searching was in 2001 so i would assume that now they would also have access to internet.

Get down to your local jobcentre plus, they can get you on track finding a job.

    Good luck

Your local library will no doubt have free computer and internet access - make use of this! They may also run classes like CV help etc!
