    I am currently on an Economy 7 Tarrif. In the last year, up to December we used 3319 day units (15p per unit) and 5929 night units (7p per unit). night units start at midnight, finish at 7am

    Can anyone tell me how to work out if it would be cheaper for me to switch to the 20:20 tarrif? I have just looked on EDF website and it says for our area, with Swalec our costs would be:

    Band A (to be charged for first 900kw per year)
    Band B 12.45p (all times other than those below and first 900kw above)
    20:20 9.95p (from 9pm until 7am Monday to Friday and all weekend from Friday 9pm until Monday 7pm)

    I'm not very good at maths!!

    Greenr To compare like with like - do you pay a standing charge for your present tariff? If so, is it equal to 900 x difference Band A and Band B?

    If so:

    current- 3319 x 15p = £497.85 and 5929 x 7p = £415.03
    Total = £912.88
    EDF - 3319 *12.45p = £413.22 and 5929 x 9.95p = £589.94
    Total = £1003.16

    However, that's without factoring in cheaper weekend electricity and evening use.

    I pay 19.93 standing charge... the thing is, we're at home at the weekends so would only be paying 9.95p per unit all weekend rather than 15p. Also, at the moment I set our washing machine to come on at 5am but if I switched to 20:20 I'd be able to put the washing on at 9pm...

    Also each night, between 9pm and midnight we'd only be paying 9.95per unit rather than the 15p we're paying at the moment.

    do you think i'd be saving any money by switching?? Thanks!

    I think you could end up no worse off and possibly saving. I considered this tariff because we do more laundry at the weekends, more cooking (so more dishwasher) and the kids often have TV etc on most of the day between them. In the past, I've had E7 and found it quite liberating when we've been able to put the washing machine or dishwasher on when we've wanted to rather than wait. In your situation, I'd risk it for the convenience.

    I think more information is needed. 15p for day rate with 7p night rate sounds rather expensive for an economy 7 plan (I pay 7p for my secondary day rates on a regular plan!). Who is this with? And do you have discounts that come off this price? Does it include VAT? (for example my EON plan has a 19% discount that comes of the published rates - quite a huge difference for comparisons)

    You use rather alot of night units (storage heaters?) so I'd have thought this plan wouldn't be that good for you - it probably looks appealing because of the poor night price you've put there. Pperhaps you need to find a better economy 7 plan, more like those other people have mentioned earlier in the thread (for example scottish power online 10p day rate 5p night rate). This is likely to save you alot more money than switching to the 20:20.

    I am with SWALEC at the moment and my charges are as follows (including VAT)

    Day: 15.78
    night: 7.61
    standing charge 19.93

    I don't have any discounts - how do i go about tryng to get one??

    The night units are only large from november until march when we have the night storage heaters on. i don't turn the hot water tank on as we have an electric shower...

    Can anyone point me in the right direction to find a cheaper economy 7 provider? Thanks

    Discounts are usually provided for such things as paying by monthly direct debit, managing your account online (inc submitting some meter readings) and/or dual fuel (gas and electric) from the same provider.

    You should probably have a look at Martin's article http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/utilities/you-switch-gas-electricity

    There is links in there to the comparison sites that you can use your annual consumption stated earlier to compare plans. They will compare all the available economy 7 plans for you and advise what the lowest cost ones are.

    Hi, I've just been looking into EDF 20:20 too and they quoted me:

    1st 225 units Quarterly @ 16.33
    After 225 units @ 11.20
    After 9pm & all weekend 8.96

    I am a high user (July to Feb @ 21 units a day - trying to get it down to 15 a day)and currently pay EDF 17.10 for 1st 225 kWh and 11.73 thereafter so thought it sounded like a good deal for me?

    Other than a 12 month contract (which apparently you can buy yourself out of @ £50) has anyone seen any draws back to it?

    I've noticed that it isn't available in the Norweb region.

    Another though is if you want to move away, do they have to change the meter again (at a cost?)

    ~If you move away from them in the first 12 months you have to pay £50 to have your meter changed back. After this time they do change your meter back but no charge
