Brown 'very angry' about bonuses

  • Interesting comments;

" But on 30 August 2007, Barclays was forced to borrow £1.6bn from the Bank of England sterling standby facility, which is made available as a last-resort when banks are unable to settle their debts to other banks at the end of daily trading.
Yes we bailed out Barclays by giving them a credit facility! And what did Mr Varley get last year? A bonus of £1.45 million whilst Barclay’s President got ten times as much - £14.8m. "

Although not bailed-out in the "taking on shares" manner, they used credit lines...

according to John Prescott, no less http://www.labourhome.org/story/2008/12/20/9416/4405

Are these people nicer than Bankers, or just competent at blind siding the public?

The difference is that most of the above we can choose to contribute to their earnings or not (with some exeptions). I object strongly to MY money being used to pay bonuses to people who should be grateful just to have a job.

Why bracket City workers earning £1m pa as greedy fat cats long before the crunch, but P McCartney (£800m) or Sting (£250m) or B Connoly (£50m) are idolised despite thier wealth hoarding.

I really don't see the difference between a fat cat Banker pre credit crunch, and Sting. They are both greedy.

Why does Sting get away with it?

As far as im aware Sting, Bono and their pals there have not been involved in the puruchasing of debt backed securities so i fail to see how can be receiving much in latest round of bankers bonuses, although I have to say I deplore Bono I find it very hard to pin this one on him, what exactly is your point?, they are rich but so what!
  • I cant understand why they paying bonuses. The banks are loosing money, they had to be bailed out, yet there staff are getting bonuses. They should be thankful they are getting paid let alone bonuses.

Few people get bonuses in the real world, why should the financial sector be any different, they get a decent enough wage as it is
  • Perhaps they should look to their own nest before commenting on others.
MP's take enough money which they aren't entitled to. Bit hypocritical.

What are you doing quoting Clarkson, that was both discrimanatory and borderline racist when he said it!

...t is clear that the trade union barons who regularly held the country to ransom 30 years ago are the role models for today's bankers.

Just as the union bosses came to believe they had a divine right to whatever they could loot from the rest of society, so is it with the bankers. They have lost the ability to see themselves as others see them. They have become so wrapped up in themselves that they cannot see that their talk about risk and reward is to most observers nothing more than a self-serving fig leaf for unbridled greed. And just as for the unions in the Seventies, that hubris will have political as well as economic consequences.

Just about sums it up, really.
Politics is not the art of the possible. It consists of choosing between the disastrous and the unpalatable. J. K. Galbraith
  • Will Gb get sooo angry, he might even force the banks to stop / recall bonuses?

after all, he/we own the majority of the shares now?
