To repair or not to repair HELP ME PLEASE

 Dont know if anyone can help but need to know if garage is ripping me off. I do not know anything about cars! (and I stupidly took it somewhere new that did cheap MOT`s instead of our usual garage)

I have a 2001 Ford KA with 19,000 on the clock.

It has just failed its MOT for the following... (from what i can remember!)

Front suspension arms are sticking out and need replacing (wishbone was mentioned)

Front near tyre

Tracking

Was quoted £480.00 EEEK Did not ask if that included the MOT, was in shock! Also the tax is due this month.

We have decided to sell it as it is our second car that was used for commuting to shift work but hubby gets the train now.

Do I pay the bill, tax it and sell it or sell it as it is? (I am picking it up and sticking it on the drive tomorow unrepaired.)

FEEL SICK:(

It does not seem that old and the mileage is low, has it had a hard bump with the kerb? If you sell it with no Mot it wont be worth much, get another quote from another garage for the repair.

Take it there, it could pass.;)

Another example of tyre and exhaust chains failing cars on things they can 'fix'?
  • Gonna take it to our usual, get it fixed and taxed then sell it SOB SOB

    Thanks for the replies.

You don't have to pay whatever they are asking. Tell them thank you very much and take it to another garage. You can do that quite legally as long as you have a pre-booked MOT there.

As others have indicated 19,000 is NOTHING for a car. It should still be in very good condition. 2,375 miles a year? I've done that in a month.

Keep it regularly maintained and at that sort of milage it'll easy last another 10 years yet.
  • JUST GOT A 2ND QUOTE. approx £250.00 for everything!! £180.00 for parts + tyre+ all the other bits!

Quite a difference. makes me so angry how garages rip you off.

    Thanks again for your advise.

I took my 9 year old 406 for mot today, and with 115k on the clock it passed.

But they only test cars, not repair them,so they are under no pressure to fail them in order to get the work, but the owner told me that this sort of practice is rife in the industry, especially with the big boys,as they have targets to meet.

It would seem that you have been a victim of such a practice, albeit it with a smaller garage, but at 19k on the clock,I wouldn't expect it to fail on much at all.
