    Hi Shely33

When I applied for DLA almost 2 years ago now, even though they had reports from doctor and consultants they sent their own doctor out.

I was very nervous as I didn't know what to expect.

She was with me for about 30 mins and we mainly dicussed how I had been affected by the pain i'm in and the medication I was on such as socialising, shopping and work etc, she was very nice and easy to speak to. she did ask for me to stand and move foot on bad leg in a certain way which to my surprise I could hardly do.

I hope this helps and all works out for the best for you.

    Hi Shely33

Would it be possible for you to have a responsible adult with you who knows about your disability, and explain to the doctor that you are extremely nervous around people?

I sat in when the doctor came to visit my dad for his DLA. So ask if you would be allowed to do this.

People read far too much nonsense on boards like this and scare themselves silly.

I honestly believe that if you have real problems then you will get what you are entitled to. You just need to tell it like it is. If you meet the criteria then you will get the benefit.

the Atos doctors do not get a bonus for everyone they turn down as a lot of people seem to think.

So why wouldn't people get what they are entitled to. Pop yourself over to the benefits board . There has been a poster on there who was asking for a home visit because she can't go out but went to disneyland twice last year and has booked again for this year.

No doubt if she gets turned down at her medical she will be crying foul.

I bet there are more people receiving incapacity benefits that shouldn't be than genuine claimants turned down.

According to him he can't bend down to put his shoes on and has someone come to do his hoovering!

you have to be true full , i had the doctor come out . spent about an hour talking and a nose around the house in all rooms to see how things where and asked how i coped in each room.asks to see all medication you have listed on notes ect. and will do a medical test/exam as well , nothing to be frighten of, as this is a normal day to day as you are, and is nice to have some one to your home to see just how bad you are. and to learn from him that you have hardly any balance at all... oh dear another illness,

  • Hi Shely33. Please try not to worry yourself. We have been through this experience many times and there really is nothing to be worried about. I do agree it is nerve-racking!

All they do is go over a form and generally ask you about your illness and how it affects you and your daily life - much like the DLA form does. The doctor is not allowed to question the diagnosis of your illness/condition nor pass judgement on any treatment you may/may not be having.

You should have someone with you who can support you. Be open and honest with the doctor about your nerves as sometimes they forget we are people and not a name and number on a sheet of paper.

It is important that you answer the questions honestly and make sure that the doctor has understood your answers or the point you are trying to get across. Try not to let them put words into your mouth so to speak!

You are entitled to request a copy of the doctors report - not sure if the request has to be in writing (no doubt someone will correct me if I am wrong!!!). If you are also entitled to question this report if you consider it to be incorrect should you be turned down/award amended etc.

Lastly, being totally honest with yourself about your condition/illness and how it affects you is the hardest thing to do. "I'm fine thanks" will not do!

yes you can have a copy of the report. As lollopoplady has said just be honest. its always nerve racking. If it does not go in your favour you can appeal.
Try not to get yourself stressed.
