Switch O2 Pay&Go to Contract?

any experience of this apreciated....

I want to migrate my wifes phone from Vodaphone pay as you go to O2 and for what she needs the Simplicity £10 contract would be perfect. In preparation we got a new O2 Pay & Go phone and were going to get a SIM-only Simplicity pack, get a PAC code from Vodaphone and transfer her number to the O2/new phone/O2 SIM.

Ok so far... but the new Pay & Go phone came with a SIM with a really nice number! better than her old one and she would be willing to change which has put a spanner in the master plan.

What I want is to activate the new P&G SIM with its nice number, then somehow get it onto a Simplicity contract and keep the number.
O2 say on the web that Simplicity is only available ordered online, whilst the FAQ P&G to Contract page says you have to arrange that via customer services.

Its going to be a real pain to order a Simplicity pack, activate the SIM in that and then get the number from the P&G SIM put over to it.

What is the chance I can set up a Simplicity contract over the phone without a new SIM and just have it attached to the P&G SIM in the new phone?

Thanks.
