Should I send this letter?

Hi all,

I received three letters from the RBS Group yesterday informing me of their decision to cut the credit limit on my cards. For what it's worth I don't have a problem with the limits being cut. However, their explanation amused me in light of recent events.

Anyhow, I've written a reply and yes, I know they say sarcasm is the lowest form of wit but...

Should I send it?

____________________________________________________________

Thank you for the three letters I received today from the RBS Group informing me that the credit limit is being reduced on three of my credit cards. For the record, I am quite happy for RBS to further reduce these limits in future but please let me comment on the text of your letters (as reproduced in italics).

As a responsible lender, we regularly review all of our customers’ credit facilities to make sure that customers can comfortably meet the repayments on their account.

This is admirable and I am so grateful that the RBS Group is looking after my best interests. However, I cannot help but wonder if somebody at RBS was looking the other way when a credit check was being made on a certain Leonid Blavatnik. It appears Mr Blavatnik successfully borrowed £2.5 billion from RBS-owned ABN Amro Bank to unsuccessfully try to prop up his ailing business. Now it seems that this loan has been written off. Ouch! That’s got to hurt… But hey, no problem – the British tax payer will come to the rescue. Oh, and speaking as a British tax payer, I wish to inform you that I, as a responsible lender, am not happy at subsidising bonuses to failed bankers.

To help us to do this, we evaluate account performance using a process called credit scoring. Using information relating to your account(s) with the RBS Group and information from credit reference agencies, our credit score takes into account factors such as your overall level of borrowing, current and past repayments and how you use your card.

It is very interesting to note that despite having reduced my overall level of borrowing by over 20% in the last year and not missed any payments that I am now perceived to be a greater risk to RBS. This credit scoring business sounds fantastically accurate!

It is important for you to note that our decision to reduce your credit limit does not affect your credit rating in any way.

Again, it is reassuring to know that my credit rating has not been adversely affected in any way. While we are on the subject of credit ratings, may I offer my commiserations following Standard and Poor’s recent decision to cut the credit rating of The RBS Group.

If you are experiencing difficulties in meeting your commitments or wish to discuss this matter further please contact us on the number above in order that we may agree a way forward.

Thank you for the kind offer of assistance should I need it. However, in the unlikely event that this turns out to be the case then I can’t help but think I’d be better off consulting Mystic Meg or the fairies at the bottom of the garden. Or maybe I could just go cap-in-hand to the British taxpayer…

To cut a long story short, in the likely event that RBS want to send me further letters informing me of further cuts in my credit limit(s) then please spare me the sanctimonious guff of your “explanatory” letter as amusing as it may be.

I'd be tempted to send it to the CEO's office.
Very enjoyable read, whether you send it or not, thanks for cheering up a gloomy Sunday.

    It's funny
    but no don't send it.
It will a low grade clerk earning £15k or less that actually reads the first one or two lines before filing it
  • You forgot to include a number for them to call you on if they get into trouble with their commitments. I'm sure they'd appreciate someone to discuss it with. :-)

Nice letter, though I wouldn't bother sending it to their customer services. The CEO as HH62 suggested, now that's a different issue.

Yeah, send it if you have lots of free time, free stamps and not expecting any sort of genuine reply.

Maybe better to send it to the RBS shareholders (expensive in photocopies) or Gordon Brown. Don't lick the envelope though if you send it to Brown as they'll get your DNA off it.
  • This kind of stuff gets printed these days, you know??! Send one copy to the CEO, and then make sure you email a copy to out to the news desks, not forgetting online news sites.

Someone is bound to print this, if only to cheer up the usually bleak pages.

Let's get real here, the CEO receive hundreds if not thousands of letters each day....(some sarcastic, malicious, threatening, from madman as well as a few that address actual issues) and they are opened by his support team and he will see very very very few.

It's supposed to read "as a responsible lender" - as it's referring to the fact that our taxes have been used to bail RBS out! Hence, us the taxpayers have lent money to RBS.

    .

And there was I thinking that CEO's opened their own post every day ..oh no, that's right, if they had to deal with mail they'd be unable to be out playing golf most days during the summer or having those cosy business lunches that last all afternoon and involve drinking Chateau Petrus by the gallon . All on expenses of course...

Seriously, I don't think anyone on this board is daft/naive enough to think CEO's deal with the mail. Or maybe not...
One thing's for sure, if OP doesn't get it published somewhere or send it to the CEO's office, he'll definitely never see it. Can't remember if it's still Fred Goodwin, didn't he resign?
