Well, someone made a comment about the board police in that thread that someone (TTJay?) put in the IWIWIW section the other day about thanking the OP, but if someone isn't a newbie then comments that are not overly rude are perfectly fair in my opinion.

I've been a bit too short in the past with some people, but then who the bloody hell is supposed to do these things? If you see it and you've been around for a while and know what happens, do it for Pete's sake.

I actually think that, in what little I've been on the board over the last few weeks, it's only fair to ask those kinds of questions when you feel like you are one of only a few people who do those things that keep everything running smoothly.

Keep doing it, I say, in as nice a way as possible while gritting your teeth, and more people will get with it.
