Thanks. I reckon the cost for the first 12 months will be about £174 whereas with BT (not than I would use them!) it would be atlear £306.

Regarding BT 1571, I have a friend who has OneTel line rental and their answering service just says this is voicemail service for ... tather than saying BT 1571.

I think Martin puts it quite well in his article on the subject
Advanced MoneySavers Note: If you’ve line rental from another company

There are two types of other companies which charge line rental.

·Disguised BT Lines. Talk-Talk and One-Tel amongst others offer ‘line rental’ yet they’re effectively still BT lines, they just do the billing, and shave the price down by a few pence. Yet I’d avoid these, as then they can legitimately block you using override numbers, and that could heavily impact your call costs.
    N.B. That's my red texting, not Martin's.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Yes the cost with BT would be £306 for a year if you took their opt 3 12x £25.50p = £306,and yes you are paying with TT 6 months at £9.99p = £59.94 and £17.98 x6 months =£107.88 .A grand total of £167.82.A saving of £138 against BT.But you probaly might have saved more(Unless you are an exceptionally high user),and kept the benefits of being with BT.
    PF.
  • Further Update:

Still no word from TT. I see their "Customer Service" - and I use that term loosely - are supposed to be open til 8pm. Been in a Q for 20 minutes so far. Nobody rang back this afternoon - parents are still without a landline.

    I'm thoroughly disgusted with them.

Got through after a further 5 minutes and guess what? Nothing had been done - they checked the line whilst I was on the phone (got the account password protected so I could talk to them this time). This means that they are without a landline overnight when something could have been done this afternoon.

The assistant apologised and said she was going to pass details on to the Manager but it still stinks that I (again) had to ring back.

    Grrrrrr!!

I'm not necessarily looking for the cheapest service, but one that will be good quality as well. Foy rears I was an Telco agent and have been doing direct sales with OneTel. I 've seen enough of BT not to want anything to do with them and see no benefit of being with them at all.
  • A resolution!!

After 2 phone calls this morning I got a customer service manager to speak to. He was unable to give me a time as to when the line would be back on, as they were still waiting to hear from BT.

In the mean time - BT have fixed the line (Mum rang me 5 minutes after I got off the phone to Customer Services).

It seems insane to me that Talk Talk can charge line rental and telephony when, where line rental is concerned, if there is a fault they have to contact BT to get the fault fixed.

There was no follow up made to BT to see if an appointment had been booked, if Talk Talk had contacted them, the CS Manager would have been able to give me a timescale.

It seems Talk Talk are "middle men" - and that's putting it politely.

PS - My Mother has now been advised BY TALK TALK to take her line rental BACK TO BT as she has a care-line.

    And it's cheaper too!
