DFH financial solutions

  • Hi everyone. I have just joined the website but I am new to forums so forgive me if I get the posting wrong while I get used to this.

I need some friendly advice. My husband and I are in a lot of debt and we have tried over the years to get out of it but nothing has worked. been following the DebtFreeWannabe stuff on website and have acted on a lot of the advice and suggestions.

We have taken the scary decision that a DMP is the best route forward. Initially we enquired via credit expert and were contacted directly by DFH. They seemed very helpful on the phone and offered us a solution which seemed like a lifeline.

After we had finished talking with them we took the weekend to do some research ourselves, mainly on this website, and reading through some of the forum threads we started to think that maybe a debt charity would be a better solution as they charge no fees.

We spoke with Step Change and they offered us a similar package to the DFH one but without the fees and over a shorter period of time.

Here is the bit I need help with.....

I called DFH today to let them know we would not be proceeding with them and this evening they have called us back. Essentially the whole conversation was them telling us why the debt charities are unreliable and that if we go with the fee free option we will likely end up worse off. They were claiming that the fees are there to ensure a higher level of service and that we would be making things worse for ourselves if we went with a debt charity.

I am confused and really scared......any advice welcome.....sorry about the long thread

There is nothing wrong with DFH. I have been with them for three years and have not had any trouble with them. They always call to go over updates and progress. Remember this when going with DFH or other fee paying debt management companies. Nothing is free in this world. You do pay DFH and I'm all for it. If someone is getting paid to sort out your !!!! then they will do everything possible to help you because without clients they have no work. The free government programs are just that. They will not bend over backwards because they are just a charity. So listen people, pay a fee because you get what you pay for. Just because something is free does not make it better.
Also people. Quit being sheep. Don't go on forums and then jump the gun by cancelling your DMP with DFH or any others. The people on here saying DFH is this and that, you're taking an opinion from someone who messed up their own personal life management and ended up in debt. Not exactly the horse's mouth and neither am I. If you want to pay someone to sort out your mess, they will most likely do a better job than the charity or government program.

Anyone can run a DMP themselves, for free.
A debt management company is just out to profit from you, end of.
All they do is write a letter, or an email, to each of your creditors, telling them my client can afford x amount per month toward his/her debt, and pay them once a month, ie, they press a few keys on a keyboard, not exactly rocket science is it !!!!.

They prey on the vulnerable, offering people, who may never have been in this situation before, and are ignorant of anything to do with repaying debt, a "way out of there problems".
Unfortunately its not a way out, in reality, they just add to your debt with there monthly charges.

These companies should not be allowed to operate peddling there lies to desperate people.

Basically they will say anything to you to retain your business.
There is no difference at all, except these vultures will relieve you of your fee every month, were as step change do everything for free.

What there "salesperson" and I stress, "salesperson" has told you is rubbish, Stepchange will run your DMP for you, and most clients accounts operate very smoothly, there is nothing your fee paying company can do for you, that SC cant do for free.

Don't be confused, you have made the right decision.
