do you have a slow cooker, i dont think id like to have the cooker on all day whilst out, in a slow cooker you could do casseroles, stews, soups, cook mince in onions, stock, gravy etc then turn into cottage pie, or cook in tomato based sauce for bol or chilli, you could do curries, supremes, etc hth x

  • i dont have a sow cooker but i dont mind the oven being left on.
  • I don't use a slow cooker (I'm at home all day) but I noticed Tesco have one for around £12ish if that helps anyone. I've put a Tesco toasted sandwich maker thingie on my shop this week - thinking mmm as its cold toasted cheese sarnies, toasted banana sarnies.
Sorry I just checked the prices - this week its back to £18.76, last week it was £12.

    2 onions thinly sliced
sausages chopped up / can leave them whole
    2 rashers of bacon chopped
    2 carrots chopped
    handful of lentils
about 2pints of stock (oxo cubes / value ones)
    any other veg you want.

Bung all in a casserole dish and leave on gas mark 2 should cook in about in 6 hours i think.
My friend shes done this before. By the way you can do this with any meat.

The cassorole recipe can be used for any type of meat. I normally just cook my meals the day before then warm up as needed.

Slow cookers in Argos for about £10, that's where i got mine from.

I'm sorry to hear of your circumstances and I wish you good luck with your budget - not easy I know.

Here's my favourite cheap homemade soup:

    red pepper and lentil soup

    1 small onion
1 red pepper (from the greengrocers or I get Asda's smartprice peppers which are great)
split orange lentils - large handful
Marigold Swiss Vegetable Bouillon Powder or Kallo stock cube (the powder will last for ages and is good for other stocks/gravy as well). 2 heaped teaspoons per 500 ml of water for the bouillon powder.
    1 tin cheap chopped tomatoes
    2 carrots

soften the onion in a tiny bit of oil then add the sliced carrots, sliced red pepper, orange lentils , stock in water and tin of tomatoes.

Simmer gently for about 30 mins until the lentils have gone nice and soft.

    Blitz it up!

This will serve about 6 good portions and tastes delicious and very warming.

Do you have anyone nearby who sells sacks of spuds (here its currently £5 a sack).I bought one of those and a huge (5lb) bag of onions for £2. Together they are saving me a fortune! Its very basic, but they are the core of most things.

yes, supermarkets are a joke for the cost of spuds and onions. they rip people off . i get 5kg - 10lb of onions in a bag at a time from brixton market for just 99p, spuds similar. they don't go mouldy if kept in right conditions, and you save pounds and pounds.
