    Hi Jen,

Just get a big pan and put it all in, no need to fry the onions or mince.
You may need more water or stock in the pan as the lentils soak a lot up.
Put it on gas mark 5 for about an hour or so.When thick take off heat and use as you wish.

    HTH

  • Barneysmom - I'm sure they would be fine there. My onions and spuds are in the hallway (very House and Garden)!!! My reasoning is you can't go wrong - even if you only manage to use half, its still so much cheaper than the supermarket.
  • yes i can buy spuds cheap. 25kg for 8 quid

we tend to 1 day of each of these -
    lamb
    beef
    pork
    pasta
    chicken
    fish
    vegetarian

This my food plan so far i'm only putting this as ideas for yourself, no doubt i'll change it when i forget to defrost the meat

All meals are HM (home made).

Sunday :- HM Chicken, bacon and leek pie + veg (leftover pie)
Monday:- Ham and veg soup (with left over veg from sunday)
Tuesday:- Pasta and tomato sauce with focaccia bread
Wednesday:- Chilli and rice (chilli already in freezer)
Thursday:- Sausage casserole (Make double with lentils and freeze)
Friday:- HM fish and chips (Buy a cheap piece wither from supermarket or fishmongers)

Hope this gives you some ideas.

hello, Ive seen this word used a lot in this board - what does it mean???

    Jen

means reduced/sale price as its on the sell by date.
i notice you have a big variety of meat each week, what about for the minute cutting that down so maybe you can save money by buying a good size quality chicken that you could have roasted, make soup, have in stirfry, fajetas, pie etc. or a joint of beef which you could have in a roast, cottage pie, meat balls, etc. or maybe buy cheaper thrifty cuts, breat of lamb, belly pork strips, ham shank, turkey leg etc. some butchers do mixed trays of meat.
try growing some veg this year, if you dont have a garden, pots and containers will do, its a good time to plan if you fancy it. definetly meal plan, that way there`s little waste and your budget should be fine, every time i roast i do extra veg and it either gets made into a pie, soup, bubble and squeak etc. for tea last nite i made a pasty plate pie, knocked up some short crust pastry, flour, marg and water. used half for base of plate kept half for top. i chopped small carrot, small onion, 2 inch slice of swede, 2 pots, and boiled for 10mins, brown small amount of hm mince but sometimes i use left over lamb, beef or cornedbeef, mixed altogether with spoon of bisto powder, salt and pepper popped on base put pastry top on brush with egg, half our in oven a its done, cost about 40p for a pasty the size of large dinner plate, we had it with hm chips, another cheap meal is toad in the hole. if you can buy seasonal veg locally its your cheapest bet and i agree with big sac of spuds, also where i live there is an everyday indoor market which sells local veg cheap, 2/3 times a week there is an outside market aswell which sells veg, but the veg outside was twice as expensive! so compare prices. oh another thing i do is ask the butcher if he has any bones for stock, they often give them free but if not there only pence, but will make great soups, sauces and gravies. hope this helps.x

  • More vegetarian stuff would be good as the most expensive bit of the meal is often the meat.

    14 oz can kidney beans

Just wanted to pop by and say I am finding this thread really useful. Mummytoash I am also having to really cut down on the shopping as my car has died and need to save save save!
i have just become acquainted to lidl - I have always turned my nose up in the past but it really is fine. Veg is good quality and things like stew packs are really cheap (small family so this goes very far in my house). Also things like long life fruit juice is very cheap - ithink i picked 1.5 litre of apple for 87p. What I am finding difficult is the sweet stuff, I bake so it isn't too bad but dream of choclate eclairs!
Wow! I wrote loads! normally just read these things but wanted to same I am in same boat and cheer you on!
Happiness is wanting what you have...
  • angelpye you should try making choc eclairs, fairly easy and cheap as fair as i remember, and taste far more yummy than bought. x
