Eating Well V's Eating Cheaply??

erm on the dessert whip thing, the one i got was 11p, banana's i worked out to be about 10p (asda smartprice ones) and my kids don't like it made with milk... freaks... but hey waters cheaper :P ... hmm actually i did work it out wrong, the "whip" did 4 small glass's (enough for 2 days) so i guess it's 11p / 2 = 5.5p + 11p banana = 16.5p .. blah 20p is close enough hehe.
I'm not sure how you can complain about people watering down milk when you make banana whip with water - surely the whole point of a whip pudding is to get milk into kids - otherwise you are just feeding them sweeteners, colouring and artifical flovouring and you'd be better of spending that 7p on another banana which is at least real food.
Of course I'm not saying kids shouldn't have 'treats' once in while but my treats are homemade cakes and bisucuits not chemicals and I'm not the one preaching about what other people feed their kids.
Oh you know i give up...
I'm trying, i've tried repeatedly to smooth things over, People seem unable and unwilling to let the matter lie, i have appologised SEVERAL times.
if you'd read the blog rather than just jumping of the first thing you saw that you thought "Arh ha i can get her on that one too" you'd noticed that i fully admit the puddings im giving the kids arn't the best and i also explain why and what i am trying to do.
they arn't great but concidering 2 months ago my kids would have been eating a chocolate bar or jelly sugery crap ... pudding even without the milk with a banana is better than that, besides i have NEVER said im a saint, nor have i even said i don't allow my kids ANYTHING that isn't bad for them.. they are kids they happen to LIKE pudding is giving it them one in a blue moon a criminal offence now.
tbh i felt like i had to justify myself i tried to write the blog to help others understand where i was coming from and see that i wasn't the evil person people made me out to be. instead In the last 2 days all i seem to have managed with my blog is give people fuel to shoot me down with...
i never said kids can't have junk, i never said i was the perfect mum and everyone else was rubbish..
We have numerous threads about feeding a family for less than £1 or feeding them as cheaply as possible, what i had hoped to get from this thread was some good idea's flowing about cheap BUT nutritious balanced meals.. not to start world war 3.
well sod it ... i give up trying to justify myself, i give up trying to make you people see that is REALLY AM SORRY for the offence i caused and that it really really wasn't intentional.
However i frankly can't be arsed continuing when none of you people seem willing or able to give me a chance and instead continue to look for ways of making me feel terrible about myself.0 -
So, to anyone who is feeling upset or inadequate because of this thread - don't. You can't please all of the people all of the time. It never works.....that way lies insanityAll you can do is your best......and if that isn't up to others standards, well, I daresay they do things that wouldn't be up to yours either. It's of no consequence
None of us are perfect - not one.
Leila, this last part was for you as much as anyoneWe all have very different ideas. That's what makes mankind so interesting - diversity!
Can we have a group hug now please folks? Aw go on, you know you want toProud to be dealing with my debts :T

Leiela,
I think the problem is that you have made this 'mission' too public and mde it sound like a finished work, when I think it is still a work in progress ?
Much as OS board can give support maybe you should have just asked for ideas at the beginning ? Once you have established if you can work on your budget, and still be sane (!!) then you could tell people. Keep your own personal diary/blog, lumps, bumps and all! I'd love to hear how it goes, after a few months say (and I am sure others would too). Don't feel disheartened, people jumped up and down a little at the beginning, because it did sound like you were criticising others without really explaining why your meal plans were any better/different!
Remember this is the internet, and much as I think OS is great, its not really the same as face to face.
All OS'ers take care now (and all MSE'ers for that matter!).

I have been insulted in the street by a stranger who shouted at me from his car that I was fat  as if I didn't know. I am disabled with a condition that means I can walk only slowly and have poor balance. I haven't been able to step outside for over a week because I would have fallen over due to the snow. I am overweight because of this condition - I wasn't before it was diagnosed as I used to walk as much as possible. I do try to go for a walk for half an hour most days but I cannot move at sufficient intensity to do any good burning calorie-wise, although it has reduced my blood pressure to normal.
I have been insulted in that way too. Only i was the one in the car that was parked up outside a local shop and a nice enough looking chap and his girlfriend walked past the car and looked at me as they passed by and the man stared in the car at me and said, 'fat c**... look at her in that car' (this was a few years ago now but it absolutely horrified me at the time and still upsets me to remember it now). I am so sorry you have had a similar thing happen to you. There are some nasty, narrow minded people in the world. If it makes them feel 'big' or 'better' than us to speak to us so hatefully, then it is they that I pity. I don't doubt that there are many people who are overweight who could lose weight if they wanted to, but people with nasty minds will always have nasty minds, they will never change. I feel sorry for them.Grocery Challenge for October: £135/£200

1. What can I do with the extra methane produced by value baked beans or stick to Heinz?
2. I think we may all be stressed through credit crunch and bad weather - can I suggest we all pop out throw a snowball or build a snowman/sculpture and if you're unable to pop out screw up a piece of junk mail and throw it, then all have a sit down with a coffee?

Well....thats me gone from this thread then....I dislike arguments myself.....
so I'll head off back to the "safe haven" of the rest of the Old style Board........
It is a bit scary in here isn't it! At the risk of losing alimb I'm creeping in!
I just wanted to say something really. I love the OS Board - from shabby chic to lentils in everything to moon cups! I have recently embarked on an OS eating plan for the main reason that I believe it is a healthier way to live. I was eating so much processed food and so much pre-packed rubbish that I had no idea what was going in my body and this was certainly reflected in what was coming out
It isn't that easy - cooking from scratch - when your skills are basic adn you cook for one! I can knock up most savoury basics but I'm slowly learning how to bake and I'm trying to look at what I cook in order to really stretch it out and keep it full of nutrition and more exciting! This in practice means that my food is only around 50% HM at the moment because it's a learning curve for me. But I tell you what - it's all a darn lot healthier thanks to the ideas from you lot and it's all cheaper by far! OSers- I dip my cap to you! My freezer is now full of broccoli, butter bean and salmon crumble, Turkey meat balls and chilli. I'm getting there slowly!
But you know what ... tonight I'm having eggs on toast. Because I like it and that's what I reallly really want!House saving Targets:

Its a real shame to be bickering on such a fantastic board, I have learnt so much from logging in here every week. Now I know I can chose not to read this thread the same as i can chose to turn something off on the telly that offends me. But I am intrigued why we all keep going over and over the same points.
We all do what we can to provide our Families the best nutrition with what money we have. How we choose to do this and with what products we buy is down to budgets and personal choice. I wish I could go out and spend over £100 a week on food for my family of 6, I wish i could pick up what ever i fancied, BUT, I can't. So I meal plan and spend around £60 a week. Im happy that I am providing my children good home cooked meals. They are thriving and they look well.
I have learnt so much from this board, and I saved so much money from the information i have gained.
Thankyou to everyone for the support they provide on here, it is a very welcoming little community!
So please end the bickering, all this energy could be used to bake something delicious for your family for tea.0 -

Thanks for replying to my post Leiela,
I hope you understand, it was not my intention to have a go. It is surprising to me that your kids eat the pudding made with water (mine would say yuk! J) but each to their own, and as you did clear up, the price you quoted for this was more than fair.
As someone has already posted I think it was the heavy handed way that the topic of amount spent vs quality of food was approached that got peoples’ backs up. The thread was already several pages long when I read your first post about £50 a week and read on in anticipation to find out how you managed it (I hoped you had some secret way to buy meat cheaply or some such).
I see now that it was an aspirational amount and a more of a work in progress and for this I do applaud you. You do seem to have come far (OS-wise) in the last few months (I hope that does not sound patronising) reducing your food outlay and reducing the junk your kids eat. Please do not be discouraged, it is always great when people are discussing ways to eat better. This thread however, has deteriorated and I hope it soon gets forgotten.
Please stay around,
MrsB.
