3 sim wont work in unlocked phone

My son has a 3 sim which he used in an NEC 338 phone that came with the sim. The phone is a nasty little phone, but it was a very cheap contract and 3 were easy to deal with when we needed some repairs done to the phone. However, my son has now completely broken the phone, it was his own fault so nothing to do with the build quality of the phone.

We tried his sim in 3 other unlocked phones, and it shows sim not registered. Out of interest we tried it in another 3G phone and it worked. So it seems we need to get another 3 phone to carry on using this sim. As he is careless with his phone I want to get him something really cheap, just for the next 6 months until the end of his contract, I've looked on ebay and there don't seem that many 3 phones around, anyone else have any suggestions of a cheap stockist? Alternatively has anyone any suggetsions why a 3 sim won't work in an unlocked phone?

3 Sims only work in 3G type phones, even if they are unlocked.

We all learn the 'hard way' unfortunately!

Even on eBay, you will find 'unlocked phones'...but they will say 'except 3 Network'

Thank you. It looks like we will just have to get him a second hand 3 phone from ebay to use until the contract runs out. It might teach him to be more careful with his phone in future anyway.

Superdrug had a deal on a Motorola C975 3 phone with £30 credit for £40 recently. Not sure if it's still on. If you don't have any luck there try Woolies they usually have some cheap phones which are end of line. Hope this helps.
