That's why I suggested that they print the legislation off to at least have a good arguement!

When I used to work in retail, I used to make my cashiers firmly aware of a certain part of most bank's terms and conditions. In Barclays, it goes like this:
We may return instructions and credits for an account if:
    • we believe that by complying with the instruction we might break a law, regulation, code or other duty which applies to us; or
    • we reasonably believe that complying with the instruction or receiving the credit may damage our reputation.

So feel free to argue the law all you like, but we still have that clause. ;)

However, the problem was getting it into her bank in the first place and that is where HSBC may be harder..... in Hbos, for example, their ATM have special facilities that once the cheque is read, no human needs to touch it so depositing a cheque this way always gets presented for payment as the name is simply ignored - only the monetary value is read by the machine.

Regarding HBOS's machines, the machine will only read the amount the cheque is paid for, but bank staff have to verify each cheque invididually (i.e. date, payee, amount, signed). If a cheque payable to Mickey Mouse and Friends is paid into an account that's not in the name of M Mouse & Friends (and the cashier is on the ball - key bit, this one!), then it'll be returned to you by post.
  • I'm sorry?

Don't be, it's fine.... we all have problems but you could look for better job LOL

(notice the 2 people that thanked SS are Bank employees - haha)

Beg to differ.... i'll find the article that ADMITS most banks prefer to take the 'hit' on smaller value cheques because it costs way too much to pay staff to check each and every cheque presented on a daily basis..... trust me, ask your bank and if they are honest they'll tell you they don't check them but will cover any losses....

    Update to follow.....

You do realise it's bad enough having to put up with ignorant customers who blame us for the world, without then coming home and having cretins like you acting like we're idiots?

The bank employees thanked me because they're probably sick of it too. And, I would add, if you think so little of me (or us), I would suggest you not call out to me or go "I wonder if SS knows..." to sate your curiosity on whatever takes your fancy.

Shame more front line staff weren't trained in your school of customer service/management then..... you seem a decent bank manager, surprisingly enough! Fair play to you.... :T

Jees get off your high horse and take a joke..... Guess my point is proven with your little outburst there! You are only a bank employee, i.e. about £15k per annum? I earned that like in 1990! So please don't take that attitude with me - you are a glorified admin assistant, paid accordingly and treated accordingly - accept it.

p.s. I refer to you in posts because I am not a bank employee and I do value your input. Much appreciated, thank you..... just chill out

Without wishing to sound smug, I worked (briefly) on the internal training guide for Halifax IDMs a few years ago.

There is a requirement for branch staff to check all payees on cheques deposited this way before close of business each day.

Failure to do so has the potential to lead to losses - those who fail to make those checks on the cheques (!!) would be likely to face disciplinary action if it cost the bank money.

You may find an article that relates to other issues, but not the one specifically referenced prior to your reply.

No, I will not bloody accept being treated like sh*t or talked about as if I'm a pointless jobsworth. Salary doesn't even come into it.

Hi - i'm not for a minute questioning you i'm just trying to find the post that Halifax employees posted up.... I know what you're saying but to be honest not everyone does everything by the book and this:
There is a requirement for branch staff to check all payees on cheques

The requirement in place doesn't mean the staff will adhere to it lol :A
