i found that kaspersky was also freezing last night. i decided to remove some old things i dont use like old game demos. i also restarted the pc. this seems to have done the trick. well nothing freezes now. i have since done scans with defender, kaspersky and adaware and they have all worked fine. i have one problem. i cant remove power producer. i installed it for my camcorder ages ago. i remember having issues getting it installed because it came along long before vista. now when i try to uninstall it i get a message that says, the installation will be terminated at this time. this software is intended for windows 98 se, me, 2000 or above versions only.
as i type i have had another attempted attack from helkern.

i get a pop up message from kaspersky. unfortunately as kaspersky is badly designed it doesnt store exactly what it says in the popup messages. here are some examples of what it does store.

    type:network attack

    15/1/2009 20:27 detected network attack intrusion.Win.MSSQL.worm.Helkern 68.193.214.100

    28/1/2009 19:44 detected network attack intrusion.Win.DCOM.exploit 86.22.230.123

    3/2/2009 15:59 detected network attack intrusion.Win.NETAPI.buffer-overflow.exploit 86.22.104.93

    network attack blocker

    7/2/2009 16:51 detected Intrusion.Win.MSSQL.worm.Helkern absent UDP from 218.89.137.11 to local port 1434

I could be wrong (Dont have time to look into it just now)
But id guess that its attacks from OUTSIDE your computer its stopping. Not that you have anything nasty on your actual computer (ie, someones trying to hack your computer)
You can probably lessen the alerts somehow so its not so annoying

i am just worried because i get at least one attempted attack each day for the past month. i just think why is it continuing to try to attack me, do i have a weakness? it is odd that the same thing continually trys to attack my pc. why me is what i am feeling. i dont want to disable the popups because i think it is best to be aware if something is trying to attack my pc.

by the way when i did a scan with kaspersky yesterday it said something within adaware called mia was a risk and as usual something within the adobe flash player was a risk. so i have got rid of adaware and i also got rid of the flash player. however when i tried to watch a video on youtube it told me i needed the flash player. so i have reluctantly got it back because i use youtube alot.

If my computer flashed up EVERY ip that tried to scan my ports it would never go away. Dont worry about it Donna

Adaware the program? That will be a false positive (Meaning adaware will have quarantined something and kaspersky didnt realise it was already quarantined)
I dont use adaware anymore anyways. I find it a bit cr*p next to malwarebytes etc

As for the flash player ~ im kinda stumped as to why it would flag it up
    Use the adobe removal tool

    reboot and run ccleaners scans
    Then reinstall it

donna - the way these things tend to work is similar to spam e-mails..lots of random addresses (in this case, IP addresses as opposed to e-mail addresses) generated at the infected endand pinged out into the ether...you're just being :-

    1. unlucky that you're getting pinged, and

    2. your security suite is picking up and blocking any hostile action on your pc
