Card no and expiry date on receipt

I'm not sure that this is the right board, but I wanted to know now many people actually realise this is an issue.

I have noticed for years that certain shops use those little card machines that print all your details on the receipt, and I'm careful to get rid of them safely. When I mentioned this at work no one realised, so I pulled a Costa receipt from my wallet to prove the point.

I guess most of you guys know about this, but how can we make sure that everyone else knows too?

Someone recommended naming and shaming the companies that do it (Costa for a start!)

Any ideas?

Maybe Martin could give it a mention it in the email. That would be a big start.
  • I remember reading about this a few years back and apparently its all to do with the equipement that the banks themselves supply !!!!

This problem was also mentioned in a 'Tonight with Trevor McDonald' and was used by credit card fraudsters as they have a ready made card number and full details!!!

On the naming and shaming bandwagon tk maxx used to do it I dont know if they still do???
  • The moral of this story is never throw away any credit card receipts!
  • I agree that you shouldn't just throw away the receipts, but I thinkthe onus should be on the banks and shops to help out, by not printing every detail on the receipt.

Why don't they just print my DOB, postcode and mothers maiden name on there too!

Some stores help by asterisking part (or majority) of the CC number. Not sure, but I imagine stores that don't do this are doing so because they are either too tight or too lazy to upgrade their CC equipment / software.

The shop's copy of the receipt (at least before Chip & PIN, when they needed to keep a paper receipt for signature verificaiton) always includes the full card details. Some older card machines used a two-part receipt (printed on carbonless copy paper with a dot matrix printer) so both copies are exactly the same, and hence also have the full card details on. I don't think there's much the shop can do about this without changing the equipment completely (if it is provided by the bank they probably have no choice in the matter).

Newer machines tend to use thermal printers and just print two separate receipts - one store copy and one customers copy - only the store copy need have the full details on in this case.

Our shop cc machine prints the full number unfortunately. We cant change this its down to Lloyds bank who supply the machine. I always make a point of telling the customer that their full number is disclosed and to take care with their copy. Our copy of their receipt has to be kept in the safe at all times.
