Commuting to Aberdeen

Hello, looking for some locals knowledge here!

Husbands got a job at Kintore, so we are going to be moving to Aberdeen soon. I will hopefully get a job at Abdn uni or at hospital.
We dont want to live in town, but in the country/village/small town. (ie can walk/cycle from our house, garden for BBQs etc).
So my question is - where are the good areas that wont have me sitting in traffic jams every morning trying to get into Aberdeen. We were thinking west or north of aberdeen but really have no idea....

Thanks for any information.

Sorry to put a dampener on things but you will always be stuck in traffic jams in aberdeen - no matter where you live!

Kintore would seem fit the bill

Kintore has doubled (at least) with new developments in the last few years and original village has been swamped, plus maybe husband wouldn't have to commute but it wouldn't be an easy commute for you. As first poster says wherever you live up here you'll be stuck in traffic, bring on the WPR. How about Inverurie which has a rail link to Aberdeen and is close to Kintore? Except aberdeen train station is in town centre and hospital/aberdeen uni are not.

One answer may be park and ride bus service which passes hospital and uni on it's route:

there are plenty of buses that go to both locations, or if keen on cycling, take train then cycle.
Sometimes i surprise myself by being right.

what sort of job are you looking for? If it's science-based there are other options than uni or hospital and some of them are easier to get to than Foresterhill.

but Kintore/Inverurie/Blackburn are all nice places to live and convenient for Aberdeen

Kintore is a good choice lifestyle wise but not as far as all the practical routes into town goes - You will end-up hitting our worst bottlenecks whichever way you go.

One thing, if you are looking to work at the Uni/Foresterhill, depending on who you work for, you may find a fair degree of flexibility for start/finish times & the shift systems at the hospital may work to your advantage - The peak times for traffic disruption are fairly short IME - Except when the weather/road problems truly screws things-up, like it did on Friday.

I'd probably live in Kintore personally and get the train to Aberdeen if the journey was at rush hour time. There are very regular buses from town centre to any of the places you might work.

You never know, you might be able to find a job in Inverurie! It's not a tiny town after all.

  • Thanks for the info guys.
Yes Glitzkiss I hope to find a science job, doing research or in a lab so I guessed the uni and foresterhill were my best bet.
I did not realise the roads would be so busy in Aberdeen, I thought it was only hard to get over the bridges (don/dee) at rush hour. I cycle 6 miles to work at the moment but have heard there is not many cycle routes into Aberdeen?

Aberdeen has to be 1 of the most heavily congested cities in the UK, it cannot deal with the oil industry traffic, dyce at 5pm every night is like a car park, nothing moving.

It took me 2hrs 45mins to get from Dyce to Union St, a distance of around 7miles last week. (Although the snow was to blame for that) but on most evenings it can take upto an hour and 30mins to travel that 7miles if leaving work at 5pm

I honestly would be quicker walking into town.

Aberdeen is an absolute nightmare traffic wise, i have lived all around the UK and it is by far the worst. It does not help having the oil industry in the vicinity of its main airport and it also does not help that any traffic going northbound, (Inverness way) has to pass through Aberdeens main routes.

If you are living north of Aberdeen and want to get into centre, you have no option but to pass through the very heavily congested Dyce area. It will be the same going in as it is coming out.....Gridlock

Not sure what your field is but there are several research institutes and a second university in Aberdeen you may want to have a look at for jobs as well as the uni/hospital.

http://www.rowett.ac.uk/ Nutrition and health institute. It merged with Aberdeen uni last year but would be especially convenient for you as it is based off the A96 on the outskirts of Aberdeen

http://www.macaulay.ac.uk/ Land use research centre. It's not as easy to get to as the Rowett but if you use the back roads you can miss Aberdeen's congestion completely

http://www.rgu.ac.uk/ Robert Gordons University is right in the centre of town meaning you can easily bus or train there from anywhere in Aberdeen/shire

http://www.marlab.ac.uk/ The marine lab is based right in Torry and not as convenient as RGU but you could still bus/train there.

There are also some biotech companies based at the old Craibstone SAC campus on the A96 on the way into Aberdeen. Can't remember the names but I'm sure google could help.

Good luck with your job hunting and the house move
