Want to change to a cheaper ISP can you help?

I've been with Virgin.net ever since I bought my first PC about six or seven years ago. They have just sent me an e-mail to tell me that they are going to raise the monthly subscription to £13.99 I am on the 24/7 package for dail up I quite happy with dail-up and don't really want to change. I just wondered if anyone advise me on a cheaper alternative. I've checked out the websites for Fast4.net and Free 24-7.net, I'm reluctant to try these as I've never heard of them (I found them mentioned in an article on this website). Any help/advice greatfully received.

Thanks

  • They are still advertising for new customers the cost of £12.49 for virgin Anytime.
You could phone them up and query this price increase? Threatening to leave might help you haggle it back down to 12.49.

For 14.99 you can get virgin broadband (this will be 10 times faster than what your currently on it will also free up your phone line). It depends how MSE you are, 14.99 - 12.49 = £2.50. £2.50x12 = £30 extra a year.

For me the money difference is worth it, but then again i use the internet a lot.

I was on the £12.49 24/7 deal but couldn't connect for a day. I phoned them and asked to cancel. They offered Broadband at the same price so I said yes. It's not the fastest broadband but it's fine for my needs. See if they offer the same deal. They promised the price wouldn't increase.

I've used Fast4 for dial up for about 3 years now and find their service okay. It's only very rarely that I can't log on with them. By the way the £6.99 is only an introductory offer - it goes up to £8.99/month after a while, I cant remember the period. If you go for them you want to watch their monthly (30 day) billing as a number of people have complained that it creeps down less than 30 days regularly. They wanted to bill me 13 times in a 12 month period last year but when I pointed this out they cancelled one months payment.
I'm going to carry on with them till I get broadband sometime this year.
  • Not exactly money saving I know, but I would put customer service way above cost where ADSL is concerned.

With the difference being a few £ a month, I would say it's worth the extra.

I have just signed up for virgin broadband, thanks again for your help, I find the world of technology daunting thank you very much.

I switched to these as for £29.99 I had an all in one package - 2Mb unlimited broadband connection, phone line rental and billing instead of BT.

This also includes free off peak local and national phonecalls for 90 minutes at a time unlike most which offer 60 minutes at a time. Sure you can hang up and redial but I regularly used to over by a few minutes - the extra 30 minutes takes care of this.

It's worth a look anyway. Oh I almost forgot to mention...... anyone else on Homecall you can call for free no matter what the time (peak or off peak). All my family now switched, my usual bill is £35 for a month of constantly in use broadband, several hours a nights spent on the phone and inclusive of line rental. I think this is good.

Kez, If you look on this thread :

(FAST 4 CONNECTION DIARY) you will find a load of info about Fast 4. If you are happy with dial-up you won't find a cheaper package. (must have BT line, but even if you are buying it throught another source such as the Post Office,it is still OK.). The price is £6.99 per month which is NOT a trial offer, but their standard price (I am still on £5 per month which WAS a special offer and they have never increased it). Their parent company is V21 and they do charge £8.99 per month. Go for it ! (and NO I do not have a referral code!)

Wooops! Have only just seen your later post stating you had signed up for BB!
Still, I'll leave this for anyone else interested in dial-up!
    Good luck with your BB.
