Unable to connect Wirelessly

Good morning and HELP!

I have a Toshiba Satellite laptop and am using BT as my ISP. My browser was IE, but I recently had problems with the laptop and on the advice given here I changed to Mozilla. Basically, everything they advised I do and download on the previous thread I did (so at least you all know what I am running). I am using a Netgear Router (can’t remember the model and make at the moment as I am not at home) but I know it was damned expensive!

Unfortunately I have a new problem. I cannot connect to the Internet wirelessly. The problem was sporadic initially and I tried a variety of solutions, none of which worked, some that made the situation much, much worse (for example, I managed to delete my router completely!). This morning I managed to re-load my router and run the set up wizard. This said that everything is working OK on the router and all the necessary lights are on. Oh and the router is secured using WEP and a passcode.

The connection works fine when connected to the router via Ethernet cable but as soon as I unplug it I lose the connection.

I have tried running Windows solutions – for example I have asked Windows to automatically find my ISP, but it cannot find a problem. I suspect that the problem lies with my computer and not the router as all the lights are on.

Can anybody help? Please bear in mind I am at work at the moment and will not be able to try out any solutions until this evening.

Thanks in advance.

  • Have you tried changing the channel on the router?
  • I'm not to sure that I understand what you're saying
"This morning I managed to re-load my router and run the set up wizard" ? did you run a wizard from a CD while connected to the router via ethernet?

...anyway..does the windows wireless wizard see the router? does it connect, but with limited connectivity..or something...or not at all?

..try, briefly, turning security OFF on the router and try to connect.

..once it all works, WPA (various types) is the way to go...wep is rubbish :)

My guess (with little info) would be that windows is not grabbing an IP from the router automatically, easy enough to fix by forcing a static IP for the lappy.

    It won't.
You have lost or reset the WEP passphrase on the router and possibly turned off "wireless" within the router.

WEP code might be on a label on the router.

Then scan for your SSID on the PC and reenter the passphrase

    No, I don't know how :o

I'll try to clarify. When I was faffing around yesterday I went into the Network centre on the laptop and deleted my router. I set up the router from sratch again, including the passcode etc from the CD. Yes, I was using an Eternet cable.

The Windows wireless wizard does not see the router at all but it does work with no problems once connected with an Ethernet cable. If it were possible to leave it connected I would but unfortunately I can't.

How do I turn security on the router off? I'll bear in mind your comments re WEP (I have read that somewhere else today).

How do I force a static IP for the lappy?

I think I have found the WEP passcode again (or at least set up a new one)

Thanks for the help so far.

Just right click on the little wireless symbol in your system tray (bottom right) and select "repair" :)

Oh I see. Tried that, no joy. It seems my computer cannot find my router wirelessly.

Have you tried reseting you router? Generally done by a pencil pushing the hard to find reset button. You'll loose your setting but its not hard to reset them.

I'll try that when I get home. I'm so desperate to make it work, I'd try most things :D
