  • Chimney sweeps should be in your local yellow pages. Years ago it was around £15 when i had it done , although it may be a little dearer now

I asked my chimney sweep this question and he said that if you are lighting the fire very regularly then it's important to have it cleaned once a year, but if you only light it occasionally it's fine to have it done every 18 months to two years.

We only light ours two or three times a week from October until March but I feel safer having it cleaned every September. Our chimney sweep charged £14 last time and kept Ds2 amused for at least half an hour.......well worth the money! :D

Our chimney sweep charges £20 but then we're in expensive Surrey:rolleyes: He recommends having it swept annually if using regulary & buring wood, once every 2-3 years if burng coal. If only using ad-hoc (visitors & Xmas say) then every 3 years should be fine. If you get smoke backwashed into the room put the fire out at ONCE & do not re-light until swept!

this website is quite scary sometimes! last night we think one of our chimneys was blocked because smoke came out of a different fireplace to the one with the fire so today i was going to look into the whole issue of getting the chimneys swept!
i'll get into the yellow pages and make sure i don't get overcharged!

    I've been Money Tipped!
Just booked mine last week :D

OH wanted to wait longer as we were advised once that the lining of our chimney was worn.
Anyone knows what you can do when this happens????

    Get a few quotes.

A couple of years ago I needed a chimney swept prior to having a gas fire fitted. I started in the Yellow Pages and was getting quotes of £70-90+ They went on about smoke tests and all sorts of gubbins.(Big franchised type companies). I then rang a local one man band who came out, did the job well and charged me £15.

In fact, I'm thinking of ringing him soon to see if he'll go on my roof and cap my chimney pots to stop the blinking Jackdaws nesting down there again! (that chimney not in use) Must put it in my diary now :D
