The only thing I've found with those wind up lanterns, (we picked ours up half price in Woolies a couple of months ago) is that the light they give is very cold, and the light doesn't *throw*, ie, it just lights up an area of about a foot directly around the lantern.

I'm about to get a kelly kettle and its accessories - I shall be experimenting with this for fuelsaving.

Does anyone know whether its safe to use one of them indoors? - or is it a case of "if its cold weather - you've still got to use it outdoors....so grit your teeth"

Nowt like feeling you might need to "camp out" in your own home - in the 21st century!;)

Ceridwen, I too was thinking about the Kelly kettle yesterday with a view to using it to save money on fuel bills and I would be very interested to learn how you propose to use it to do just that. Would you mind sharing your thoughts please?

Two pairs of tights and thick jogging pants are warm. I wear knee length chaps socks in winter.

Ordinary tee shirts are good, especially the long sleeved ones. A thinnish jumper and woollie cardi over that is very warm.

I bought lovely thermal vests, long sleeves and all. Dh put them in the tumble dryer - I had said not to - result two barbie sized thermal vests.

Can one still buy liberty bodices and directoire knickers? The corset was also a good garment for insulation - worn over a vest for added comfort and warmth. :D

p.s. If you go onto the vintage knitting pattern sites there are LOADS of patterns for knitted undies. COOOOOOL !!

Just couldn't resist looking while the gas man services the boiler and the water guys put on the meter!

i ASKED THE CALOR GAS SHOP HERE RE A CAMPING GAZ BISTRO STOVE --THEY LOOK VERY NICE AND i GOT ONE. hE SAID THEORETICALLY YOU SHOULDNT USE INDOORS --oops screaming sorry ! --because IF there was an accident of any kind then your insurance wouldnt cover it. ie I would end up having to pay for my house & next doors if it blew up. Not that I'd be in a state to care LOL. But I thought to use it for making tea only ( I drink tea all day) and use it on the sink drainer next to the open window, & dont leave it alone.

moany - I'd forgotten all about liberty bodices.............lol Mum used to insist I kept wearing them until the end of May. Must admit, if my memory serves me right they were lovely and warm but without sleeves......so my arms always got cold.

This site has lots of vintage pattern and instruction books for all sorts of crafts - knitting, crochet, tatting, lacemaking, cross stitch - the list goes on and on.

So far my favourite is the Beehive Knitting Booklets No. 9. There are so many ideas for pressies.

Did you also have suspenders on them for those thick black/brown stockings? They were itchy!!!

Hubby has one out in the shed, but when I suggested bringing it in......well I won't repeat what he said. He really didn't adapt well to my money saving ideas.

No suspenders.................wasn't allowed them till I was about 14 and then it was normal stockings and only allowed to wear them if I went out socially. Oh the days of Berlie (is that how you spell it ?)!
Till then it was socks and at school the dreaded regulation ones at that !
