I agree with Ceridwen
Im currently looking on amazon at the wind p lanterns - £6.99 at present.
I would rather look to getting one of these with a 4 year old as havign cnadles dotted round the place could be very hazardous and we dont have anywhere out of his reach to put them otehr than on top of our small fridge freezer which is pointless as its the opposite side of the room to everything else.
At least with a wind up lantern i can put it on the table in the living room adn he can sit and colour near to it without the fear of him getting hot wax everywhere including on him if he knows it - granted the lantern may becoime hot but i dont think it is so hazardous.
Have also found a radio/torch that winds up to but i think i prefer the lantern myself.
Anniewoo - I agree you do have to laugh (i have images fo us all walking round unheated houses looking like the wombles in my head) but it is tragic that in the 21st century we are all havign to go back to how our ancestors lived.
PITLANEPIGLET - you could set your dad up an online account with tesco - register it for him under his address and name and then you could do a tesco shop for him, if you do dont forget to get him a tesco card as this will take some pressure off witha little discount and there are plenty of discount codes on teh other forum which will cover delivery if nothing else which all in all will make everythgin less stressful and traumatic for him. The most he would have to do then is open the door and sign for it.Time to find me again0 -

Thanks Sammy, yes I've got an account with his details on it but for the moment he's happy to keep sorting himself (he's worried about what I'll make him eat :rotfl:) and fingers crossed will be near to him by next March or so. It is worth people knowing that you can do this though and as you say it's a case of signing for the shopping and then just putting it away in their own time.Piglet

Peeps, I have been looking on Ebid and note that they're selling thermal undies (for blokes) pretty cheap compared to the Dark Side. In case anyone's interested!0

Lidl do thermal undies men & women, it is one of their special offers, so not always available
I use them for riding my bike in winterEight out of ten owners who expressed a preference said their cats preferred other peoples gardens0 -
Afternoon all
Well im lucky that hubby and i don't very often feel the cold... hubby tends to sit in just a pair of shorts as soon as he is showered after work -regardless of the weather:rotfl:although when he does feel a bit chilly he would get up and click the heating on  that soon stopped ... "try putting some clothes on" said several times soon sank in
im still planning on making draught excluders for winter... every little helps... Im going to make the inner using an old stuffed tight leg and then wrapping in a bin liner..then making a loose sleeve to go over it -so i can take it off and wash it and the middle bit won't get wet with the opening/closing of the door
I think there is nothing nicer than snuggling up under a "blanky" on the sofa with a couple of candles flickering...so will be getting more candles in stock ready
Im with Ceridwen -not a fan of energy saving lightbulbs either, but when we moved in here they were allready in, and we were issued 12 replacements..so im using them- not that i have the overhead lighting on very often either...
As for thermals.... hubby is under instruction that he is to get himself some nice new ones via the army before he leaves-well he is thinking of having a motor bike for getting to work once back in civvi street-so i think he is going to need them..
I have spent 3 weeks back in the UK recently and some of the prices made my eyes water.. im glad to be back here .. its going to take some getting used to when we move back..not for at least 2 years yet -thank heavensso at least i have time to get used to cutting back..so when we do come back we will have got used to it

I'm about to get a kelly kettle and its accessories - I shall be experimenting with this for fuelsaving.
Does anyone know whether its safe to use one of them indoors? - or is it a case of "if its cold weather - you've still got to use it outdoors....so grit your teeth"
Nowt like feeling you might need to "camp out" in your own home - in the 21st century!;)0 -

Re your comment Mrs MCawber - I would be interested to know some German prices levels now for standard foods - for comparison purposes. I have the suspicion that British food prices have possibly increased more than those on the Continent - and would be interesting to know please.;) I certainly couldnt see a reason for it, if so, as they are subject to the same pressures as us (ie 75% of these food prices rises being down to foodland being used to grow biofuels on).0 -
ceridwen - it is my understanding that yes storm kettles do produce smoke so not indoors. i know a couple that re-instated a fireplace in their upstairs bedroom so they burn the 'kettle' in the fireplace so the smoke goes out the top. i've been thinking hard on that one too.0

Ooh, no. I didn't realise they did grants for that. I knew about the grants for insulation etc, which is something I need to sort out, as there's NO insulation here atm!
Thanks for telling me, I'll look into it today.0
