The community spirit is still with us but it depends where you live as not all areas can form a community, that is where threads like this can take over, to provide the support needed. Better than samaritans as most of us have similar objectives. We were never meant as a species, to survive on our own
The aim of the thread was to raise awareness and not to cause any panic. I do appreciate that people joining the thread late will not have had the advantage that the pioneers have had but there are lots of things that can be done at a late stage. The absolute most important thing is to get out of debt and also to make cheap tweaks to the way you live so that the coming winter won`t be the last straw :grouphug:0 -
Balmaiden I too long to live in a society like that but just looking around me where I live I just don't think it'll happen sadly.
I would hope that the spirit of communties would kick in again as it did where we lived in the last recession but sadly I think that society has changed beyond all recognition since then
I tend to agree with you I don't think society now in anyway resembles society then.
When we had the strikes and 3 day week there were weekly collections for food parcels for the strikers and those on short time. The miners in the community would help by dishing out some of their free coal allowance to those who had no money for fuel.Neighbours would bake and drop each other round a pie or something. Not many people would do this nowadays.
Neighbours rarely communicate and there's very little community around now.
It's a sad reflection of our time's.
That's the good thing about this board,we support each other morally even if we can't do nothing else.0 -
Hubby and I like a tipple and for the last couple of years, instead of buying, we've been brewing:beer: We make wine from foraged fruits, apples from our very prolific bramley tree in the garden, plus anything that people kindly give us! There is no doubt it is what is called 'Country Wine' but it tastes good and is very cheap as the only cost is a bag of white sugar, so we get a gallon of wine for 76p!:T I'm sure I've read about others who brew on here? Anyway, cheers to everyone:beer:0

I think we'll all have to be very careful about guarding our possessions as times get harder. Somebody even pinched my swimming costume at the gym when it was hanging up a few weeks ago! And during the last recession when I was working, we had a whole spate of thefts of spectacles left lying around on desks. It seems that people were stealing other peoples' glasses to avoid having to buy new frames and were just having their new presciption lens fitted into them. It's horrible to think that you can't leave your handbags, wallets, etc. around safely at work, but the sad reality is that behind the facades people present to their colleagues you never know how financially desperate some people are behind the scenes, which triggers them to do these things.
Reading this post reminded me of people stealing coal, during the miners strike I think it was. I was only young at that time, but when we moved to the house that we're in now, I would be woken in the mornings with a terrible crunching sound like someone walking on gravel (or nicking coal) outside our bedroom window, which was always left open.
I would strain to hear exactly what the sound was, 'cause I was sure somebody was nicking our coal (bunker just below the bedroom window), but thought coal thieves should be a bit quieter if they didn't want to get caught.
Turned out it was the cows in the field right next to our window:rotfl: .
:eek:Boy, do those cows make a racket when they're eating in the peace and quiet of an early morning.Official DFW Nerd Club - Member # 593 - Proud To Be Dealing With My Debts!0 -

Made roast potatoes and pork in mine for tea and they turned out great.
DH was even more impressed when I told him the oven uses 2000 watts and the moskie 650!!!!
I never thought the thread was intended to frighten people but as someone who remembers the rolling blackouts and shortages of salt, sugar, coffee and bread at various times, I think it is only sensible to make sure you have some staple ingredients at home, as well as hot water bottles,a large Thermos flask, wind up torch etc.
If we do get "bounced" from MSE then lots of us will follow to wherever a blog is, I certainly will."This site is addictive!"

Thanks Moany - very much appreciated. I try my best and provide the best I can for my family - we are by no means well off and have had our fair share of hard times in the last few years - many of which im sure OSers are aware of but thanks to finding this community when I was preg with my little one it really has helped us through alot and it continues too.
Thanks to MSE for example this very moment I am currently sat in my very warm little flat (thats to the preparing for winter thread:money: ) with my little boy in his school unifrom (neutral for christmas thread helped pay for it:money: ) with him eating a handful of grapes (grocery challenge:money: ) and about to enjoy a jam sandwich from homemade bread (thanks kethry!:money: ) with homemade bramble jam (jam making thread and weezl:money: ).Time to find me again0 -
Just want to say a big "thank you" to everyone who gave me advice when my car failed its MOT last week and Arnold Clark wanted a small fortune fixing it. Instead of just going ahead, I took it away, took advice from the lovely peeps on here :T :T , done a little work myself, and took it to a local garage today, who fixed it for half the price, customer service was brilliant, car was ready when I wanted it to be, I feel so much better.. Thanks again0

I've just been reading the last few pages of this thread and while I'm not sure that I'm going be quite as 'extreme' as some of you guys...I certainly feel like the current climate means I need to be thinking ahead.
I was reading the 'tips on dealing with a recession' thread and someone there was saying that a fea years ago was the time to be preparing for our '7 lean years'.
That's really spoken to me. Last month we cleared all our 'pots' of money to pay off one loan. We still have another one, but I'm really encouraged to be putting money aside for either an Emergency Fund, to pay the loan off early or to pay off the mortgage.
Actually there aren't many things we really need and its actually quite releasing to think that I can make different choices...
Anyway...thanks....0 -

I didn't mean that the thread "intended to frighten" people but rather that it may incite panic among people who read it.
I agree about the sensible precautions for winter. I need to, living in the Highlands in a cold old house but some of the talk on here has been more about stockpiling far more than is necessary, how we are returning to wartime shortages and revolution!!!
I'm just of the opinion that life is very, very short and we should spend as much time enjoying it as possible.0
