You need a license if you own a receiveng TV OR a video recorder, even if you are not receiving the BBC channels. You do need a TV license to receive ITV/CH4/CH5/satellite etc regardless, even though the cost of it funds only the BBC. You can get the tuner bit removed professionally if you only want to watch DVD's, this is the only way you can get around it. I belive there are new changes comming into force regarding the watching of dvd's & TV via the internet/computers but am not upto date on what this is.
And even if you do have your tuner removed or don't own a TV, the licensing board will hound you to death 'cos they just won't believe that you don't:rolleyes:

oops sorry didn't read it all... YOU DON'T NEED A LICENSE IF YOU DON'T WATCH TELLY BUT ONLY WATCH PRERECORDED VIDEO'S AND DVD'S
that is the simple truth (of a tricky matter) and the tv people HAVE been to my house!
you simply have to detune your tv so you don't get any signal, even faintly
you must NOT have it connected to an aerial
that's it
you can watch dvd's and videos
i've had all this confirmed to me the first time i contacted them, and by the tv men that showed up
AND there is a lot of documented evidence on the internet as well
they want you to believe otherwise but it's not true

actually a lot of the doublewides in the states are lovely and since the mid 80's have had to live up to very stringent laws about the quality
i've seen them put on a basement and on slab foundations and they are gorgeous some of them
not like the old singlewides all boxy and gloomy like in the 70's yuck!founder of Frugal Genius UK (Yahoo Groups)0 -

you MUST detune your tv completely and it must not be connected to an aerialfounder of Frugal Genius UK (Yahoo Groups)0 -

that bit is true BUT you contact them, explain that your tv is detuned, not connected to an aerial and that you ONLY watch prerecorded dvd's and videos
then you happily invite the eejits in when they come and show them this fact
i had to move a bookcase in the kitchen to show them where the aerial was
then i had to move two wardrobes on either side of the telly in the bedroom to show them there was no aerial there
by that time and after seeing the 400+ videos they weren't that interested in me flipping through channels to show them they are all detuned :rotfl:
i actually ENJOYED their visit...
i also have always ranted about how crap tv is and that i choose what my daughter sees and how i'm anticapitalist and don't want her barraged by adverts etc etc
they now believe that i'm 'crazy enough' to not watch television LOL
funnily enough, we do actually have quite a few tv show box sets...just the ones we like that's all
oh one more thing, i was told on the phone that if they found even ONE tape that wasn't prerecorded (ie a previously blank tape that had had something off the telly recorded on it, even if it wasn't done in my home) then i could get in trouble for that
not a problem didnt' have any of those...i buy my stuff from charity shops
but just a warning...founder of Frugal Genius UK (Yahoo Groups)0 -
I often wonder how they catch people in flats where you can't see in the flat from the road? For a couple of years the flat below me was occupied by an overseas student who didn't have a TV. There were lots of letters from the TV Licensing people, and even the odd card through the door when they visited. The thing is, they only ever visited during the day when everyone in the building was at work/college. And no-one in my building randomly lets people in at the front door anyway. He didn't have a TV, but even if he had, I don't know how/when they would ever have got in his flat to see.
Re the TV detector vans - we used to rent a house as students which didn't 'exist' on any address lists (renovated after being empty for years) and and we didn't have a licence(not that I'm advising this of course!) A few times when watching the TV we noticed the TV detector van parked on the pavement outside - literally 10 feet from our TV, but we never had a visit, so I'm a bit sceptical of their 'we can detect' claims.

Back on topic, I'm going to cancel my Sky+ when the contract ends and get a freeview hard disc recorder. I don't watch most of the Sky channels I pay £30 for, but I do use the Sky+ a lot because I often work long hours. Most of the channels I watch are available on Freeview, so even though I've got to buy the new freeview/hard disc recorder, I should start saving after about 5-6 months. And I can sell my old Sky+ box on EBay.
Another (very minor cost) thing I've already started doing: I use loads of those little tins of Vaseline lip balm which cost £1. I've bought a big tub of Vaseline now and am now just refilling them.
I've made loads of soups for my freezer. Even if I buy fancy bread to go with them, it's still cheaper than bought lunches. I like a cooked lunch in the winter, so often make scrambled eggs or beans on toast (posh bread though!) - others in the office with takeaway lunches are often jealous of my yummy lunch.
I'm using my (work paid) gym membership more - if I'm there I'm not using my heating and hot water at home! And it's a posh gym so free shampoo, body lotion etc............and of course I get fit which is always better. I also walk to work, 3.5 miles, quite often which saves on tube fares - although admittedly not so much in the cold or rain.0 -
Cool idea about the apron to save your clothes whilst cooking - will start to get the kids to use their napkins at meals for the same reason - could dramatically cut my washing costs.“the princess jumped from the tower & she learned that she could fly all along. she never needed those wings.”

This is the start folks. Energy is going up as from march 1st and scottish power is only the first energy company to announce. Then in april the council tax will be going up by about 6%
I have been doing on minimum heating for the past few weeks. I put a shawl on when I start to cool down and it makes a big difference. I snuggle into a fleece throw when I watch tv in the evening. I drink a hot drink when I feel to-the-bone cold. I make lovely warming soups. All in all I am comfortable, if cooler.
I am definitely not going to live in cloud cuckoo land. These increases are here to stay0 -
As I live several floors up I have no garden so can't grow my own veggies. What I should be doing is going to the market rather than the supermarket! I used to get a rucksack full of fruit and veg for a fiver and that was more than enough to last me the week. This thread has shamed me into planning a trip there this weekend! What if the hokey cokey is what it's all about? :eek:Official "Bring back Mark and Lard NOW! or else (please)" Member 160
