Snowed up?

Here we are blaming everyone about to much snow and not enough being done. For many years I have carried snow socks and snow chains in my car why can't we as drivers prepare ourselves for this rather than get stuck get some socks!

    What the heck?

So you have carried snow chains in your car since the last falling of snow like this...1989.

Well, i guess 19 years having absolutely no use for them has paid off over the last 4 days.

i think half the problem is people not knowing how to drive in the snow. I've driven in this snow, not got stuck yet, and i have an awful rear wheel drive car...

it amazes me how stupid some people can be when driving in the snow, driving too fast, driving too close to the person in front etc etc...

and what has this to do with travel trips and holidays anyway?

Do you carry spair tyre? How many times have you used it?

Do you pay breakdown cover? How many times do you use it?

£30 for socks and a life time of security.

I can take my snow socks out quite easy. Very small and easy to handle. If however I choose to keep them in all summer no problem. They even come in handy when on wet grass to tow the caravan.
Or then again lets leave it to everyone else to help me out. Then I can blame them all. Lol

    Are you on somthing?

See, what i do is watch the weather. And, if it says its going to snow i put my boot on that morning. I dont need snow chains because quite frankly 2 inch of snow does not require them.

As for a spare wheel that is a ridiculous comparisson.

However, as a fellow MSer can i direct you to this place: https://www.gooutdoors.co.uk whereby you will find many excellent pairs of socks for way way less than the £30 you were done for.

Along with snow shoes, snow chains, a shovel and 100KG of rock salt, I also carry in my car a six man zodiac liferaft, Immersion suits, lifejackets, flares, fresh water and a VHF Marine Radio to use in the event of flooding... which in recent times has proven to be a far greater threat than snow. ;)

I think the snow socks the OP speaks of are the kind that go on wheels. :)

I suspect all those people who were stuck in Devon overnight wished they had bought auto socks.;)
If I lived somewhere remote I would definitely buy them but as I live about 50 yards from a main road ( where the council depot is within half a mile, conveniently), I would be taking them off after getting out of our street as driving on clear roads would wreck them.
If people went out on their streets with shovels, then EVERYONE would be able to go to work / school - main roads are almost always clear.
Whe I was young we lived on a steep hill that ended in a cul de sac - everyone would go out and clear the road and also put the ashes from the fires down, I can remember my dad having to dig us out of the house, yet the milkman still delivered.
My wimp of a brother works at Aston Martin and wouldn't even drive on the motorway the other day:rolleyes: whereas my hubby works in rural Derbyshire ( 35 miles away) and has managed to get in no problem.
My 19 year old daughter managed to get into our street in her fiesta the other day when my dad in his Jag couldn't! ( And he used to be a bread man! )

One particular problem is the fad for huge alloy wheels. As wheels have got bigger then the worse they'll perform in the snow. Couple this with summer performance tyres and it's a recipe for disaster.

If you look at Continental Europe people are happy to buy a BMW or Mercedes with 16" wheels knowing that they can fit snowchains on them rather than 19" wheels which are near impossible to shoe with chains. In the UK we like the neighbours to see our 19" wheels...............
