getting tyres

i get next to new tyres from an old garage.

they get tyres from germany who have a higher tread threashold than we have here, i pay £13 for 2 continental tyres (or any other make they have). germany have to have different depths in treads but we the underdogs of the world can have bigger tread depths if you know what mean. im female:D

I thought 1.6mm was standard throughout the EU :o

What's the minimum tread depth in Germany if not 1.6mm?

Legal limit and safe are two different things. The legal speed limit on the motorways is 70mph, but you wouldnt do that in heavy rain or snow would you? I usually replace my tyres once they get beyond 3mm too, as they deteriorate in effectiveness quickly from there down. At 3mm youve only got a couple of thousand miles use out of the tyres anyway, so you will be buying them 3 times as often, so even at £12 each its a false economy as you could buy new ones for up to £36 and actually be safe on the road in all conditions too! My last pair of NEW tyres cost £32 each so already im up on you and they've got 8mm tread ;)

tyres, steering and brakes I don't ever do second hand unless I have no choice..

I always run remoulds or budget rubber mind. Usually last me 2 years+. I do the roatation with them too, so they do last quite well. I also have a £5 wheel and tyre from a scrapper sat at mums as an emergency measure.

Think I pay about £30 a tyre..its usually "I want the cheapest, decent quality ones you do". Running a set of roadhogs right now - not bad. The set before that, boy oh boy - wouldn't corner in the wet, slipped everywhere, made it a real adventure on anything less than a dry surface.

The roadhogs seem to work quite well on the snow..I've not spun the wheels yet!
  • Tyre's are probably one of the main things on a car you do not want to skimp on.

They are the cars only contact with the road and therefore imo the most important thing to get right from a safety point of view.

You could alway buy a pair of ditch finders and fall of the road every time it snows, is icey or rains. (recent weather related incidents would suggest more ppl have been economising on tyres than ever)

I'm not saying you have to buy top end rubber. But at least get something mid-range.

I have always understood that the minimum tread depth of 1.6mm is a EU wide law. In Germany when a vehicle reaches a certain age (iirc 2 or 3 years old) all the tyres have to be replaced with new ones irrespective of tread depth. A lot of the tyres removed from German vehicles find there way onto the UK secondhand market.
