Have you tried https://www.wholesomehouse.co.uk ? One of my boys is AS and we follow a gluten/casein free diet with him and they are the most scruplulous checkers I know..If it is even made in a factory that uses equipment cross contaminated they don't stock it.They are extremely helpful so it might be worth asking them?My son has a little one in his class who is allergic to nuts and his poor mum has nightmares finding stuff,I do think the manufacturers err on the side of caution now with the labelling which is a good thing but it also significantly reduces what you can eat!!Best of luck in your search

Thriftlady I know how you feel about nut allergy.

Our grandaughter now 10 has it and it is a nightmare trying to find nut free food for her. She has Epipens. It gets so bad that when they fly abroad for holidays her mum has to contact the airline and ask them not to serve nuts for at least 2 days before due to nut dust in the plane.

Mum carries cards for her when they are abroad saying 'I am allergic to nuts. Are there any in this food? What oil do you cook in? " in different languages as they can't take chances.

Knnerton are one of the best for nut free food and also Waitrose. Waitrose have a book which shows what their foods (mainly bakery) contain.

Tesco did have a chocolate cake that says 'nut free'. I don't know if they still stock it. Baking Boys products are nut free. They make cakes and flapjacks etc although it's better to make your own.

They belong to the Anaphylaxic society and get regular newsletters and advice on foods and what they contain. This does help.

Only a person with a nut allergy child knows what life is like trying to find nut free products.

    Good luck. Maisie

I have just checked in Morrisons and one bag had nothing written on it about nut but the other bag, slightly more expensive, said that they were packaged in a factory that also produces nut products.

The Kinnerton factory is just down the road from me and my neighbour who is a shift manager there said that even if you have totally seperate machines producing nut and nut free products in the same room, however big the room is, they have to put the warning on the products because of the risk of transfer.

  • My son was also diagnosed as being nut allergic (particularly peanuts), carried an Epipen and we went through the nightmare of avoiding anything that might contain nuts for years. He is now 14 and last year I insisted that his consultant order the allergy testing (I had been told when he was tiny that it could only be done in a facility with paediatric resus). A simple blood test was done for the most common nuts and it came back that he was only slightly allergic and that in the event of exposure antihistamines would alleviate any symptoms. Since then we have not gone out of our way to expose him to nuts but have had no reaction either. It is worth asking to have the test done to discover the degree of allergy.

I agree though that pasting "May contain nuts" all over everything really is not helpful.

Just checked a Waitrose bag of sunflower seads, it said may contain traces of nuts, sorry!!!
My godson has a serious nut allergy, has been hospitalised a few times now, it would be lovely if shops did do a range of nut free produce, like they do for diabetics and the gluton free food!!!!

Gosh, thanks everyone for checking packets for me.

D&DD,thanks for that link,I've emailed them.

Maisie, thanks for sharing your family's experiences.I must admit I've been put off foreign travel due to concerns with air travel and nuts and with language.I know translation cards exist.

    Sproggi,interesting info about Kinnerton.

Shillyshally,I find your son's story really interesting and encouraging and I will definitely try and get dd properly tested. Thanks a lot :)

catowen,I agree, there seem to be plenty of diabetic and gluten-free products out there but no nut-free.Tesco used to stock Kinnerton dark choc bars(which are also dairy, gluten and egg free)but they stopped stocking it because it wasn't selling.I was buying loads of it :rotfl:

You sometimes have to laugh over these allergy warnings.
Bags of fish fillets that say 'contains fish',or butter that 'contains milk'.Or the really weird one on my bag of porridge oats(not the Value ones you understand because they 'may contain traces of nuts'but the more expensive ones  )that says its only ingredient is oats, but the allergy advice says it contains wheat
Well, coeliacs are allergic to gluten, which is mainly found in wheat. However, oats, barley and some similar things also contain gluten. So obviously they went crazy and put contains wheat instead of contains gluten, as probably there are some coelaics or similar who aren't aware that gluten can be found in other things, or like for friends/relatives who want to do shopping for them

Boots sell sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds. I'll look at the packet next time I'm in there. If anyone is in there before me please look and let thriftlady know.

These allergies are very serious and can be life threatening. Especially nut allergy so being aware and with help from other posters life may be a little easier for allergy sufferers.
