Sluggish network system

A few months ago I installed the Linksys networking system to allow my son internet access from his room. Sadly, the performance of his part of the network is so slow that he continues to monopolise my computer, thus negating the purpose of the network!
I am running Windows XP service pack 2, and when I contacted Linksys they recommended I download a patch in order to counteract the 'issues' they had previously discovered with my Windows package. This I did to no avail.
I also upgraded my service from Telewest Broadband in the forlorn hope that this may help - no such luck!!
I feel that I am throwing 'good money after bad' in an attempt to network these two computers.
Any ideas anyone??

Can you provide us with more info like make/model and setup of your networking. I assume by networking you mean a router.
Assuming it is a router, are you linked up via wireless or ethernet (network) cable (RJ45), or both?
Update:
You say his part of the network is slow so I assume it's wireless connection. If so the easiest way around that is connect it via ethernet cable assuming your router has LAN ports, or try and relocate the router or his computer so they are closer.
Failing that then maybe the wireless card in your sons computer has problems or something?0
