I firmly believe Brown is just going to try many different things in the hope one of them gives him enough of a temporary boost in the polls to risk an election.
It's utterly shameful how one man's relentless pursuit of power is putting us all in debt for decades to come.
Fixing the economy is not his priority - getting re-elected is.

How dare Brown being a politician, engage in such blatant politics.

I agree, it's almost as if just because he worked all his life to aspire to become prime minister he now wants to try and hang on

Sometimes you have to put your personal agenda aside for the good of all.

The problems we face are bigger than mere politics now.

I agree, the whole shabang is now a points scoring exercise, no more than that. Politicians are incapable of putting personal agenda aside, tis the reason they entered politics.

I foret who it was who said you vote for the party who's lies you prefer.

  • What would happen if the government just said 'due to the current downturn blah blah we have decided to postpone the election indefinitely'.

Most people would probably say 'switch over love, it's some boring politician, Strictly Pet Hospital on Ice is starting on BBC9 and then it's Whites United versus Dynamo Real on Sky'

Nothing. Parliament expires by law after 5 years and the election writ is set for a month later. The government cannot overrride this even if they wanted to - they wouldn't get a bill through Parliament extending its life, and any law passed would be declared unconstitutional by the courts.
  • When the election has come and gone im afraid very little will change. and after a year or so we will still be on here saying how bad the Conservatives are governing and some saying how we need a change.

    Same !!!!!! different day. Ho - hum.

I don't think this is true. The choice will be a stark one. The Tories will slash public services and put vast amounts of people on the dole all in the name of cutting the deficit. But really their aim will be to cut taxes on the rich.

If the Tories win get yourself a BUPA sub, private school and a big alarm to keepout the thiefs.

If labour win they will at least try to protect jobs & public services - more taxes for the rich however.

Aren't the banks to blame for the crash?

Which party does the average banker vote for?

Quite. What do right wingers believe in - that the "private sector" provides best. The private sector can't even provide us with a decent financial system. All the private sector provides us with is a sytem whereby the rich get richer, with their fat bonuses, and everyone else gets turned over.

The Tories would be worse than labour in this regard. imho - not better.

Well the current Labour Government seem to have managed to increase taxes on the middle classes more than the rich.

People haven't minded paying higher taxes in the good times - this has been shown in research and by Labour winning in 3 general elections.

There are only 2 ways forward imho:-

    1) Vote Tory - They will take the axe to public services (the current crisis will give them an excuse - they don't believe in them, paricularly good healthcare and schools for all ). The Tories will argue that axing public services is necessary to get rid of the budget deficit. (The UKs deficit is not a problem but look at how the Tory press is trying to convince everyone it is - scaremongering). They will put vast amounts of people on the dole and crime will rise. Life will be truly sh!! just like it was under Thatcher and why - just so rich people can pay less taxes.

    1) Vote Labour - they will try to keep people in work and maintain good standards of public services. - but they will put up taxes e.g.VAT increase, raise top levels of tax.

    No brainer for me;)
