Tenant council tax con

If council tax is calculated on the basis that you pay for 10 months and get 2 months free, why if you rent for 6 months only will they not apportion the amount or give you the equivalent of 1 month's rebate? Even if i transfer my council tax to my new flat, i still have to pay the full 6 months again. Surely this can't be right.

You don't get two months free, your yearly council tax is just being paid over 10 months instead of 12.0

Contact your council and ask to pay in 12 (lower) monthly installments.0

There is no con.
You don't get any months 'free'. you simply pay in 10 installments.
You contact the council on the date you move in, & contact them again the day you move out. Then they calculate exactly what you still owe for the exact number of days you lived there. You might have overpaid, & get some money back.0 -
If you have overpaid and move they will give a rebate, I've had one when I've moved. There is no con and better to overpay and get rebate than not to pay enough and get a bill demanding more.0

Are the bands the same on both properties?0

Just wanted to say that I used to think like you
but I figured out there is no con - took me a while though ^^0 -

I got a refund from the council when I moved out after 9 months after the "overpayment". Are you paying the council directly? If yes then you will get your refund too.0

go back to your original council tax bill and look at the annual amount, have you paid half of this value? if not you will get a bill / rebate for any under / overpayment.
Look at your new flats council tax bill, what is the full year charge, are you being charged half of this?
You should find the charge is correct it's just being collected on different dates than you are used to.0
