Late Payment Fees

Just been charged late payment fee on my Natwest CC although I paid £ into a Natwest bank 3 days before due date.

Customer services refused to refund stating that although the money was in their account - I needed to allow 3 clear working days for the funds to allocated against my account.

Anyone know if I can challenge this and if so on what grounds.

You could call Natwest and see if you can get the fee credited back as a goodwill gesture
    OR

    Hope this helps

How many days does it say on the back of your statement.
The fact that you paid it in at A Nat West branch may not mean it gets there any quicker than if you were paying off some other credit card.

I have a NatWest card and this is what it says on the back of the statement (i would presume your says the same)

    Making your payment
To make your sure your payment reaches us in time please,
    * Pay in at any bank, allowing three working days (excluding Weekends and Bank Holidays) before the payment date on your statement (if using the payment slip provided with your statement)

So the only logical reason I could think of is that you maybe paid the payment on a Thursday or Friday?
If not then if you have proof that you paid the card before the three working days and that it went out of your account (provided you paid through your banking account) then I would say you have a good cause to challenge it.
Did you pay by an account? if so check to see when the money was cleared.
  • Regardless of the wheres and whyfores of when payment should have been made, these late payment charges are illegal. By all means contact NW, and they probably will refund the charge as a good will gesture if this is a first occassion. However, that does not preclude the fact that the charges are not enforceable, visit https://www.bankchargeshell.co.uk for clarification.
