Have you tried our winsock fix suggestion?

Hi, thanks for this but it isn't the laptop that's the problem - my husband is using the laptop and it's fine. I'm using the desktop, connected via ethernet cable, not wirelessly. I have no problem with connection speeds when I'm actually connected, it's just the dropping connection and USB problem I'm having.

    Hello,

Have you tried connecting on a ethernet cable into the laptop ?? do you still have the same problem with it dropping ?

    cheers

Hi everyone, sorry didn't reply sooner, haven't been online much over half term. Yes I did try the winsock fix suggestion, it didn't work so I tried aliEnRIK's suggestion of uninstalling Zone Alarm yesterday. Fingers crossed that seems to have done the trick as I haven't lost the internet connection since I uninstalled it :j

At the moment I haven't got a software firewall running except for the Vista one, plus the router firewall. I've tested this using ShieldsUp and it passed all the tests. aliEnRIK suggested PC Tools firewall but it doesn't get very good reviews on download.com. I don't do any dodgy downloading, never click on adverts and am careful about which websites I visit. Would I be OK just keeping the Vista firewall or should I try Comodo? (that gets mixed reviews too on download.com).
  • PC Tools is a good solid firewall and I would choose this over others at the moment.

Having said that you are hidden behind a router and while not ideal, Vista Firewall will suffice - it's better than the XP version.

Part of the Furniture Combo Breaker
Im under the belief that the only reason it gets bad reviews is because they never completely cleaned their last firewall off. Ive personally used it on quite a few computers now with no problems
