Energy Saving Bulbs - The ones to buy and the ones to avoid

Good idea for a thread!
When buying energy saving bulbs we take this into account:

There are undoubtedly many people out there who use those types of 'exposed' filament bulbs in reading/desk lamps and have no idea about the risks. It may be a co-incidence that not long before publication of that report, retailers started selling off those types of bulbs at ridiculously low prices and continue to do so.0 -
The local Morrisons supermarket is selling 11w low energy lamps at 5 for 50p - while stocks last.0

It seems to me that you must have severe eyesight problems if you need to have a desk light closer than 30cm.I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.0 -
Thought I better mention that Morrisons have the Philips bulbs on a 5 for 50p offer right now.Everybody is equal; However some are more equal than others.0

We currently have various lights/spotlights that take the small halogen bulbs with the small two pins at the bottom (not the best way to describe it I guess). Can you get energy efficient versions of these and what should I look for ?0

If they're 240 volt then they're called 'GU10's. Try googling for +gu10 +"energy saving"
You can get LED versions but they're not cheap!0 -
Tesco often have general electric bulbs on offer. They seem pretty quick and bright.
As far as I can tell the shaped ones seem less good, the ones that are simple sort of stick shapes tend to be brighter and quicker to warm up.0 -
Asda are selling some energy saving lightbulbs for £1 (they were on offer 4 for a £1 but that has ended now in my local store)
I bought them because they were on offer but have been pleasantly surprised! I actually find that they are extrememly bright and almost instantly compared to the Phillips ones I have in my kitchen which take about 5 mins to reach full brightness. Finally decided to start growing up when it comes to money!:j

I recently came to UK and visited my daughter, she has energy saving lightbulbs.
I found that the room really did feel much darker when they were switched on. They never seem to "warm up".
Not knowing much about lightbulbs, i have asked her to check what the wattage is. Could be that they are the wrong ones for the job. If they are wrong, I would like to replace them. If they are an old model which has been updated, they would need replacing.
I have seen the offer at Argos for 10 Philips bulbs for 1pound, also seen that Which rated Ikea bulbs.
Has anyone tried the Ikea bulbs?0 -
